**Position Summary**:
Reporting to the Supervisor, Airfield Maintenance, this position is responsible for leading a team of Airport Surface Maintenance Specialists and being involved in performing maintenance activities on all airside and groundside surfaces. The Lead Hand supports the Supervisor by ensuring all team members are properly trained for all tasks as well as regulatory requirements, ensuring that all staff are working in a safe manner and in line with SOPs, standard work methods and PPE requirements, assists the supervisor in ensuring that all airfield, apron and groundside inspections are completed as required, acts as leader in incident response in the absence of a Supervisor, and provides feedback and recommendations to the Supervisor on staff performance.
**Key Accountabilities**:
- Leading and providing firsthand technical guidance to a team of Airport Surface Maintenance Specialists including knowledge sharing, on-the-job training, and troubleshooting
- Identify shortfalls that may impact the daily plan in an expedient manner
- Ensuring work is completed to a high standard and in priority sequence as delegated by the Supervisor
- Complete Job Safety Assessments prior to undertaking assignments
- Reviewing hazards of assigned tasks and PPE requirements with staff prior to commencing assigned tasks and ensuring that everyone follows safety measures, SOPs, and other compliance requirements
- Supporting the Supervisor in ensuring all employees are properly trained for all tasks as well as regulatory requirements including delivering equipment, safety, and policy and procedure training to all staff and notifying the Supervisor of any training shortfalls for inclusion in the Training Plan
- Respond to contain oil and other spills or clean up debris from Motor Vehicle Accidents on Airfield and Groundside and delivering Airport Emergency Support equipment as required. Leads the crew in incident response when the Supervisor is not present
- Assists the Supervisor in ensuring that all airfield, apron and groundside inspections are completed as required
- Providing feedback to the Supervisor on staff performance including exemplary performance and areas of opportunity/development for all staff including new hires
- Acting as a lead driver for bussing operations involving multiple busses, coordinating vehicle and task assignment and performing ad hoc bussing requirements as well
- Taking appropriate action to deliver on requests by the Supervisor/Technical Inspector
**Qualifications**:
- Secondary school education and/or experience in heavy equipment operation
- Valid “D/Z” Provincial Driver’s License
- “D” class Airside Vehicle Operator’s Permit (AVOP) or successfully obtain one within thirty (30) days of appointment to the position
- Snow Removal, construction, heavy equipment experience would be considered an asset
- Obtain and retain a Transportation Canada Security Clearance
**Knowledge, Skills and Abilities**:
- Knowledge of surface maintenance and repair techniques, spills containment procedures, surface maintenance policies and applicable aviation standards pertaining to the movement area
- Knowledge of the operation, mechanics, inspection and regular maintenance of busses and heavy equipment such as snow plow/sweeper/blower units, trimmers, mowers, power tools, chemical applicators and back hoe
- Knowledge of airfield and groundside layout, landscape maintenance techniques, and fence, gate and sign repair practices
- Knowledge of Hazmat and TDG procedures as they relate to the job and the ability to utilize a vehicle to chase wildlife as required
- Ability to communicate fluently and effectively with all levels in the organization
- Ability to work with mínimal supervision and effectively prioritize tasks as circumstances dictate
- Ability to effectively lead, coach, and mentor team members, fostering a positive and collaborative work environment
- Ability to work on a computer and be comfortable using Microsoft Office including Outlook, I-Share, and RMAX
