Since 2015, we've been building the Shakepay app to make buying and earning bitcoin fast, easy, and secure. In 2022, we launched the Shakepay Card, allowing shakers to earn bitcoin rewards when they shop. **Legal Counsel**:
We're looking for a curious, business-minded Legal Counsel who's ready to roll up their sleeves and grow fast. You'll be part of a small, highly collaborative legal team that works hand-in-hand with every part of the company - from product and operations to compliance and leadership.
This is a chance to practice law on the frontier of fintech and crypto, helping shape the legal frameworks for technologies transforming money itself. You'll advise on complex, novel issues and see your work directly influence how millions of Canadians interact with bitcoin.
**What you'll do**
- Partner with teams across Shakepay to provide practical, actionable legal advice that helps the business move fast while staying compliant.
- Review, draft and negotiate a wide range of commercial agreements.
- Monitor and interpret evolving regulations in financial services, privacy and crypto — and turn them into opportunity.
- Collaborate on new products and features, identifying legal risks early and crafting creative, business-oriented solutions.
- Build scalable processes to make legal work more efficient and impactful.
- Work closely with regulators and external counsel when needed.
- Grow fast, with mentorship from senior leadership and exposure to a wide variety of legal and strategic challenges.
**What you bring**
- LL.B. or J.D. and active membership in a Canadian provincial bar.
- 4+ years of legal experience (law firm or in-house).
- Strong commercial and corporate law foundation, especially in contracts and negotiations.
- Excellent judgment, communication and problem-solving skills.
- A proactive, adaptable and entrepreneurial mindset.
- Genuine curiosity about fintech, crypto and technology's impact on financial services.
**Nice to have**
- Experience in fintech, crypto, or financial services.
- Experience in fast-growing or startup environments.
- Fluency in French.
