Highlights of the job

EPCOR Water Services (EWS) group currently has an opportunity for one (1) temporary full-time (for up to 11 months) Laboratory Technician to join the Engineering & Technical Services - Analytical Operations team at the Rossdale Water Treatment Plant.

What you’d be responsible for

As a Laboratory Technician, you are accountable to the Laboratory Operations Manager and will be accountable for, but not limited to:

  • Ensuring the delivery of optimal results against appropriate performance metrics including:
  • Health & Safety objectives
  • Environmental objectives
  • Quality objectives
  • Customer Service objectives
  • Behavioural expectations
  • Performing analytical testing by following standard operating procedures (SOPs) on various water, wastewater, biosolids, sludge and industrial samples both in the laboratory and in the field. This includes testing of Water and Wastewater for chemical, physical and microbiological parameters.
  • Preparing chemical solutions, including, standards and reagents and microbiological media for the use in laboratory analyses.
  • Operating, maintaining, calibrating and troubleshooting critical laboratory and analytical equipment including: laboratory dishwashers, water purification system, drying ovens, fume hoods, autoclaves, and testing equipment.
  • Performing quality control and quality assurance checks on work performed, such as monitoring control charts, taking action when data is non-conforming and taking the appropriate corrective actions.
  • Assisting in monitoring and maintaining stock chemicals, reagents and materials in the laboratory.
  • Receiving and recording samples delivered by the customers into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMs).
  • Performing daily, weekly and weekend assignments as directed by the Lead Technologist and/or the Manager, Laboratory Operations.
  • Collecting field samples from various plant processes at Water and Wastewater Treatment facilities, water distribution systems throughout the City of Edmonton (including homes, public facilities, recreational centres, etc.) and other locations.
  • Delivering samples to appropriate locations, including other EPCOR facilities and commercial laboratories for sample analyses.
  • Providing various housekeeping duties as required, such as disposing samples and hazardous wastes, washing and sterilizing field-sampling equipment and collecting bottles.

What’s required to be successful

Qualifications, experience and behaviours you will possess are

  • Completion of a 2-year Diploma in Chemical, Biological and/or Environmental Science from a recognized post-secondary educational institute.

- Experience that includes 1 to 3 years working

  • In a chemical, analytical and/or environmental laboratory environment with water, wastewater, industrial, and/or environmental samples.
  • A basic understanding of drinking water and wastewater public

- and environmental-health matters such as

  • Canadian Drinking Water Quality Guidelines
  • Alberta Environment and Protected Areas, Drinking Water and Wastewater Regulations
  • Valid Class 5 Alberta Motor Vehicle Operators License
  • Ability to qualify for and maintain an EPCOR driver's permit
  • A Driver Abstract (5yr. Commercial type) may be required
  • Limited to 6 demerits or less

  • Demonstrated capability to meet the physical demands of the position (clearance on pre-placement medical and drug and alcohol testing may be required) which includes lifting/carrying weights up to 20kg (45lbs) on a daily basis.

- Competent in the following

  • Performing analytical testing and processes
  • Using Microsoft Office Programs (primarily Outlook, Excel, Word and Teams) and other computer based software (such as LIMS)
  • Planning and organizing duties and responsibilities within the expected time-frames

Starting Wage: $39.23 per hour

  • Final wage placement will be determined at the time of selection and based on a combination of factors as outlined in the Collective Agreement (CA) that may be found online.)

Hours of work: 75 hours bi-weekly
