**Please note: This is a 40 hour per week position, supporting the midnight shift coverage and will be required to be available for an on-call rotation on weekends.**

**About the Role**:
Reporting to the Manager, Custodial Services, the Supervisor is accountable for front line supervision and leadership of the custodial services function. This includes planning and coordinating work assignments, supporting staff and maintaining a high standard of service. The Supervisor is responsible for overseeing a team of 20-35 custodial staff.

**The Supervisor, Custodial will**:

- Build relationships with staff in order to establish effective two-way communication about service levels/needs, barriers and opportunities for improvement;
- Proactively engage with staff on a regular and ongoing basis providing feedback on performance and where necessary, provide reasonable disciplinary action;
- Realign and adjust staffing, as necessary, to handle special requests, shifting requirements and staff absences in accordance with relevant collective agreement language;
- Ensure staff have the training needed perform their work to the expected service standards, including assessing staff skills and providing training as appropriate;
- Build a positive working relationship with union stewards to effectively resolve workplace and collective agreement issues, including actively participating in grievance procedures;
- Develop, understand and maintain reasonable and equitable work routines based on university service needs and approved service standards;
- Conduct regular audits of service areas to ensure ongoing attainment of approved service standards, including working with staff to rectify identified areas for improvement;
- Ensure effective and fair staff scheduling processes, in line with the collective agreement, are implemented to facilitate appropriate staff coverage and resourcing;
- Lead investigations after a near miss or workplace injury occurs, providing appropriate documentation in a timely manner and suggestions for improvements and future risk mitigation;
- Work collaboratively with Health Management to support staff on a leave (i.e. sick leave) to an early and safe return to work;
- Ensure compliance with Canadian and Ontario health and safety legislation and regulations, including performing regular safety reviews and taking action where necessary;
- Communicate with relevant staff when supplies need to be ordered.

**Key Skills and Experience**:

- A post-secondary degree or diploma;
- Current Ontario driver’s license (Class G) with an acceptable driver’s abstract;
- Supervisory experience, in a comparable custodial leadership role within a unionized environment;
- Awareness and understanding of applicable legislation (such as the Occupational Health & Safety Act, Employment Standards Act, Environmental Protection Act, and Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act);
- Ability to interpret collective agreements and act on University Emergency Response protocols and procedures;
- Ability to assess and manage defined standards of work;
- Ability to estimate costs and manage budgets as approved by your Manager;
- Proficiency with computer skills and Microsoft Office;
- Ability to collect, summarize and report on work activities including preparing written reports, procedures and guidelines;
- Knowledge of best practices in custodial services, non-hazardous waste reduction, and safety management;
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to create cooperative work relationships with staff;
- Exhibits professionalism, tact and the ability to represent Facilities Management in a professional and appropriate manner;
- Strong decision making, organizational, and logístical skills;
- Ability to take initiative, use good judgement, creatively solve problems, and adapt to change in a fast-paced environment.

**Preferred or Asset Skills**:

- WHMIS certification;
- Level 1 OHS training;
- Accident Investigation training;
- Computerized work loading scheduling.

**Salary and Total Rewards**:

- Job Grade K, Salary Scale ($70,034-$113,591);
- Target Hiring Range: $70,034-$75,000
- This is a permanent position that includes:
