**COMPANY**: Since 1982, Jamie’s Whaling Station and our team of local expert guides have been professionally guiding adventure seekers from around the world to explore the stunning ecosystems of Clayoquot and Barkley Sound on Whale Watching, Bear Watching, and Hot Springs Cove tours. Jamie’s takes a lot of pride in using our tours as platforms to educate our guests on our local ecosystems. We focus on every living organism, from big to small, with the goal of future preservation and conservation of these pristine ecosystems.
Jamie’s operates our waterfront adventure centres in unceded Nu-chah-nulth territories of of hiškʷiiʔatḥ (Hesquiaht First Nation), ʕaaḥuusʔatḥ (Ahousaht), ƛaʔuukʷiʔatḥ (Tla-o-qui-aht First Nations), Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government (Ucluelet First Nation), and tukʷaaʔatḥ (Toquaht Nation) in both Tofino and Ucluelet, British Columbia.
**POSITION**: SVOP Skipper Full Time/5-days per week including weekends.
**DURATION**: Full-time and part-time seasonal positions (March - October)
**DESCRIPTION**:Our SVOP Skippers are responsible for operating tours in Clayoquot and/or Barkley Sound. Skippers run our 12-passenger vessels in a safe & secure manner, while delivering an exciting and educational tour to our guests who travel across the globe to see our local wildlife.
**RESPONSIBILITIES**:
- Assure pre-departure checks have been completed, including checks of engine, safety equipment, weather and appropriate route planning. Properly fuel-up, record voyages in logbooks and store equipment after use.
- Communicate any maintenance issues with Maintenance Team and work with them to resolve issues
- Safely navigate vessel for duration of tours (2.5-3 hours) in accordance with your certification and the ‘rules of the road’. Ensure that all marine, environmental and wildlife viewing guidelines are being met and or exceeded
- Provide outstanding interpretation for guests in relation to local ecosystems and wildlife, all whilst focussed on guest safety and comfort
- Contribute to photos, videos, and data to our research partners
- Take part in crew training sessions
**SKILLS & PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES**:
- Knowledge and experience operating in coastal environments. Experience in Clayoquot and Barkley Sounds an asset.
- Some knowledge and experience maintaining marine equipment and engines.
- Excellent communication skills: you will be passionate and knowledgeable about our local marine ecosystems, and keen to communicate this to guests.
- Empathy and a drive to educate: We encounter guests from everywhere in the world with hugely differing expectations. You will be keen to meet them where they are in your drive to deliver outstanding interpretation.
- Committed team player: our crew of skippers, naturalists and office staff always work together to deliver a high-quality customer experience, whilst prioritizing comfort and safety.
- Ready to learn and continue professional development: crew are expected to attend on-going training and safety drills throughout the season
**QUALIFICATIONS**:
- Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP) certificate
- Marine Emergency Duties A-3 (MED A-3) or Domestic Vessel Safety (DVS)
- Radio Operators Certificate Marine (ROC-M)
- Marine Basic First Aid
- Seafarer’s Medical
- CDN number
- Local knowledge of our marine environments, wildlife, natural history in Clayoquot and/or Barkley Sound is an asset.

Pay: $29.00-$35.00 per hour
