NATURE OF THE WORK:
The principal and customary role of the employee in this employment class consists of performing technical work in prevention and individual or collective assistance for students with personal difficulties.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work in collaboration with the professionals responsible for the First Peoples’ Centre, the First-Year Students’ Office and faculty in the Journeys program;
- Meet Indigenous students individually or in groups to provide information about different policies, their rights and responsibilities;
- Refer Indigenous students to counsellors or other professionals and/or services depending on their needs;
- Work on preventing and raising awareness of various student-related personal and social problems;
- Respond and provide support to Indigenous students that are in crisis and reach out to the various Indigenous community services for assistance, as needed;
- Identify and support students who are experiencing problematic situations;
- Synthesize and record data of problems submitted in order to make an evaluation and suggest solutions;
- Participate in the development of socio-educational activity programs that prioritize student retention;
- Use facilitation techniques to assist groups in organizing themselves and implementing activities aimed at developing significant relationships;
- Liaise with the Journeys program teachers, community elders and the professional in the First Peoples’ Centre, as needed;
- Perform other related tasks.
**Requirements**:
- QUALIFICATIONS:
To have a diploma of college studies (DEC) in Social Work Technology or a related field (Psychology, Indigenous Studies, etc.), a diploma or an attestation of studies which is recognized as equivalent by the competent authority.
CONDITIONS:
- Knowledge of Montreal-based resources for Indigenous health, psychosocial, housing, financial and academic support
- Intermediate French oral skills (testing may be required);
- Advanced English language skills (oral and written) (testing may be required);
- Excellent interpersonal skills;
- Basic Microsoft Word and Excel skills (testing may be required);
- Experience working with Indigenous communities/community resources (an asset).
