Position Overview

We are currently seeking a dedicated User Researcher to join our dynamic team within the Burlington Digital Service of the City of Burlington. In this role, you will play a pivotal part in shaping user-centric services and policies by deeply understanding the diverse needs and behaviors of our community. Your primary responsibilities will involve conducting both qualitative and quantitative research, ranging from user interviews and surveys to usability testing. This data-driven approach will enable you to provide actionable insights that influence design and policy decisions, ensuring our services are accessible, effective, and meet the high standards our citizens expect.

Responsibilities

As the User Researcher, you will collaborate closely with designers, developers, and policymakers, translating complex research findings into clear, actionable strategies. Your expertise will not only contribute to enhancing current services but also in identifying opportunities for innovation in our municipal offerings. The incumbent will play a pivotal role in ensuring that our services are tailored to the needs, behaviors, and feedback of our community, thereby improving overall service delivery and citizen satisfaction.

A key responsibility of the User Researcher is to conduct comprehensive data analysis, converting large sets of user data into actionable insights. This involves meticulous study design, data collection, and statistical analysis to drive evidence-based enhancements in municipal service offerings. This approach will contribute to the development of innovative municipal services that are efficient, effective, and truly catered to the needs of our citizens.

Central to this role is the advocacy for and implementation of human-centered design principles. The User Researcher will be instrumental in creating services that are not only technologically savvy but are also deeply resonant with the experiences of our citizens. This will include regular community and organizational engagement to directly incorporate user feedback into the iterative design process, with the ultimate goal of delivering services that are accessible, intuitive, and genuinely enrich the lives of those we serve.

The User Researcher will also facilitate a collaborative environment within the municipality, bridging gaps between departments to foster a unified approach to service delivery. By promoting interdepartmental communication and partnership, the role ensures that the user research insights are integrated across various service areas, aligning with the municipality's overarching goals and contributing to a cohesive user experience.

Requirements

You have a post-secondary degree in a relevant field such as Human-Computer Interaction, Cognitive Psychology, Sociology, User Experience Design, or related Social Science. A UX Certification is required. A master’s degree in one of these fields or a professional certification in User Researcher methodologies would be considered an asset.

Applicants should have:- Therefore, a minimum of three (3) years of experience is required in research planning and design, demonstrating proficiency in developing research strategies that address complex service challenge.- At least two (2) years of dedicated experience in data collection and analysis, with a proven track record of translating user data into actionable insights that inform service development and policy.- At least two (2) years of experience in creating detailed user personas and journey maps that guide the design of intuitive and user-friendly services.- A minimum of two (2) years of experience in conducting usability testing and synthesizing feedback to improve the user experience of services or products is essential.- At least three (3) years of experience in a role requiring active communication and collaboration with stakeholders, demonstrating the ability to influence and engage across various levels of an organization.

This position may require occasional travel between sites and/or City facilities.
