Indigenous Cultural Counsellor

**Duties and Responsibilities**:
Reporting to both the Assistant Director of Equity Services, Responsible for the Center for Indigenous Initiatives, and to the Assistant Director, Health & Counselling Services, the Indigenous Cultural Counselor will provide professional counselling and support for Indigenous students on campus. The cultural counselor is a professional counseling position with a significant focus on supporting student wellness, cultural knowledge sharing, student success and community service provider relationships, in accordance with the policies, goals and objectives of Carleton University
**Qualifications**:
**The incumbent must possess the following qualifications**:
- Previous or current experience providing psychotherapy and crisis intervention to individuals with a broad range of potentially complex mental health issues. This includes experience and confidence assessing and working with people who have experienced trauma, and who may be at risk of suicide or self-harm;
- Experience in clinical case formulation and treatment planning in a mental health setting;
- Experience responding to clients in emotional crisis or urgent need in an unscheduled or drop-in format;
- Demonstrated Knowledge of and appreciation for the diversity of cultural traditions and spiritual practices of First Nation, Metis and Inuit peoples;
- Excellent cross-cultural communications skills;
- Substantial knowledge of Indigenous experiences in Canada, and particularly in educational contexts;
- Extensive experience working with and within Indigenous communities, in roles including community development and/or partnership building;
- Understanding of the developmental stage of this age group, key mental health issues, and the unique stresses experienced by students in post-secondary and by Indigenous students in particular;
- Knowledge and experience in program development and group facilitation.
**Education and Experience**:
**The above is normally acquired through the completion of**:
- Master’s degree in Social Work or the equivalent combination of education and experience
- Current valid registration with Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Worker or College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario
- Five years working as a counsellor and psychotherapist
- Two years’ experience in program development and group facilitation
- Experience in an Indigenous community, organization or context
