**POSITION FUNCTION**

Coordinate, review and participate in the work of the Parks Division.

**KEY DUTIES**

Coordinate, assign, review and participate in the work of approximately 15 FTE involved in arboriculture. Ensure schedules, procedures and established performance and safety standards are met; make recommendations on employee selection, promotion, discipline, training and development, provide input to employee performance appraisals.

Assist in the development and implementation of tree maintenance programs in accordance with industry standards; assist with work schedule planning and monitor expenditures; estimate monetary value of damage to assets by age, pests, vandalism or accidents; assist in preparing annual budget. Provide technical expertise to identify, monitor and make recommendations on control of pests and diseases impacting Urban Forests.

Conduct site inspections to review activities of contractors and outside agencies to ensure adherence to specifications. Make recommendations on the selection, maintenance and reactionary work related to the urban forest. Assess problems involving tree maintenance and tree hazards, perform tree risk assessments and evaluate removal requests; respond to and assess storm damaged trees; maintain a variety of manual and computerized records.

Support coordination of seasonal work programs. Review job matters and schedules with outside agencies and city departments.

Actively seek to identify and solve problems quickly with effective solutions. Respond to inquiries and concerns from the public and other departments.

Perform related duties where qualified.

**INDEPENDENCE**

Work is assigned and is reviewed through discussion with supervisor.

Issues such as staffing matters, major expenditures and tree removal are referred to supervisor with recommendations.

**KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES**

Organize and prioritize the work of assigned crews.

Knowledge of Tree Preservation Bylaws,

Operate hand tools and equipment

Read and interpret plans, blueprints and working drawings.

Basic level knowledge of current City software programs and related specialty software.

Maintain accurate records.

Supervise small staff groups (up to 15 FTE).

Establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Deal effectively with the public and outside agencies.

Work safely on job sites and participate in safety programs.

**QUALIFICATIONS**

**Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification**:
High School graduation.

Technical School Diploma in Arboriculture, Horticulture or a related field (2 years) or related Trades Certification. (4 years)

Current and valid International Society of Arboriculture Arborist Certification.

Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ).

Completion of courses in an accredited supervisory/leadership development program which covers: Conflict management, leadership, Communication and Project Management. (80 hours)

Pesticide applicator’s license. (40 hours)

Current and valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License with air endorsement.

**Experience**:
3 years of related experience including supervisory experience

or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

**OTHER**:
May be requested to substitute in a more senior position.
