Job Description Summary
Supervises the entire glycoconjugated drug delivery development program (GlycoCage) located in the BC Children's Hospital Research Institute (BCCHRI). Provides technical and innovative leadership in development of new techniques and supervises the day-to-day technical operations for an exciting research program investigating the pharmacokinetic and efficacy analyses of glycocaged pro-drugs. Is a globally recognized expert in pre-clinical modelling for drug discovery and assessment. The first goal of this research is to establish appropriate murine models for drug testing. A second area of study is to determine how the murine host metabolizes pro-drugs. Finally, the program will compare the efficacy of uncaged, parental drug to pro-drug in animal models. GlycoCage has been growing rapidly and is funded through program and operating grant from the CIHR, Crohn's and Colitis Canada, the GlycoNet Strategic Sciences Fund, and Michael Smith Health Research BC. The incumbent is to be a key leader at GlycoCage, who directs this effort, and has to also establish the collegial environment dedicated to enhancing the health of children.
The incumbent will be working in the wet laboratory areas of the BCCHRI. GlycoCage is a modern building which has many windows. BCCHRI is very safety conscious, all hazards: chemical, radioactive and bio-hazardous are handled following established protocols.
The individual should be self-motivated, able to perform tasks independently, and have the ability to supervise and direct the work of staff and trainees. The incumbent has to have a proven track record of this.
Organizational Status
The individual will report directly to the Principal Investigator (PI) directing GlycoCage. The individual must also work in association with another research and administrative manager and will interact with numerous faculty, staff, and students throughout BCCHRI, BCCH, and UBC.
Work Performed
- Reports directly to the Principal Investigator while acting as an authority in the field; provide consultation to PIs in other institutions (at UBC and Agriculture and Agrifoods Canada (AAFC) in experimental design and trouble shooting immunological experiments.
- Designs, implements and supervises novel experimental procedures, for projects investigating immune responses to challenge in pre-clinical models.
- Responsible for presenting research at local, national, and international scientific meetings.
- Makes development proposals for follow up experimentation as a result of performing and interpreting the results of complex technical procedures.
- Solves complex non-standard technical problems and methodologies using creative cutting edge solutions; advises other laboratory members and collaborators on experimental design for complex pre-clinical modelling.
- Manages the laboratory's mouse colonies, oversees experimental outputs, sample processing, as well as all material stocks required for these.
- Manages longitudinal/prospective studies in which pre-clinical models are tracked and stored for years.
- Ensures that required documentation and accurate records are kept by laboratory personnel on experimental work.
- Responsible for assessing and evaluating major equipment needs for GlycCage.
- Responsible for troubleshooting equipment problems and dealing with vendors.
- Trains and oversees the work of Post Doctoral Fellows, Technicians, Graduate students and Undergraduate students.
- Trains new employees and trainees on use of laboratory and shared building equipment.
- Writes scientific manuscripts.
- Performs other related duties, as required.

Mismanagement of the laboratory will negatively impact the integrity of the research as well has harm the reputation of all stakeholders involved.
