If yes, the Alberta Medical Association is recruiting for a Billing Educator to join our talented and dynamic Health Economics team. In this role you will provide education and advice to physicians and their billing team members with respect to appropriate use of the Alberta physician Schedule of Medical Benefits (SOMBs).

This is a high profile/high impact position that requires a thorough and detailed knowledge of the SOMBs and the interrelationships contained within. The incumbent must be effective in influencing others to reach consensus decisions in an environment.

**Position Overview**

As the AMA’s Billing Educator, you will, provide education, advice and mentorship to physicians with respect to their fee-for-service and/or shadow billing under the Alberta Health Schedule of Medical Benefits. Key responsibility for this role includes, but are not limited to, the following:
**Billing Education**:

- Develop and present virtual and in-person billing seminars related to the Schedule of Medical Benefits (SOMB). This includes responding to ad hoc questions on various topics at time of seminars.
- Create asynchronous web-based educational material to promote appropriate billing of the Schedule of Medical Benefits (SOMB), billing for uninsured services and the Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB).

**Expert Billing Advice and Mentorship**:

- Provide advice and advocate for physicians in matters relating to appropriate billing practices.
- Participate in and/or provides guidance and assistance to fees-related committees.
- Assists physicians in understanding and responding to audit questions by AH.

**Physician Advocacy and Support**:

- Participate in and develop options as an AMA representative in bilateral AMA/AH or trilateral AMA/AH/AHS activities that relate to the fee schedule or other physician payment issues.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with key staff at AH, Alberta Health Services and other provincial medical divisions in relation to issues with physician billings or audits.
- Alert sections to problems with billing/payment (claims difficulties, inappropriate/inaccurate billing, other deficiencies in the billing codes), and to develop strategies to address problems within sections and, as necessary, with Alberta Health or other payors.
- Assist with change management associated with SOMB modernization activities.

**Education and Experience**
- Bachelor’s degree in business, health administration, or related field.
- A minimum of 7 years of experience in health-related field, with preference given to individuals with Alberta Health claims’ experience.
- Excellent knowledge and understanding of the Canada Health Act, the Alberta Health Care Insurance Act, the Alberta Health Care Insurance Regulations, the Schedule of Medical Benefits other provincial fee schedules, and the Worker’s Compensation Board Act and Regulations.
- Experience with planning and develop web-based billing educational materials and an advanced ability to plan and present virtual and in-person seminars for a variety of audiences (e.g., physicians, resident physicians, sections, clinic staff).
- Experience facilitating training sessions.

**Skills**
- Demonstrated ability to develop strong, successful working relationships and partnerships with stakeholders.
- Excellent organizational and planning skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including leadership, facilitation and mediation skills.
- Knowledge of different presentation tools and delivery platforms, e.g.., handouts, power point, etc., is needed to ensure that the information presented can be assimilated by the seminar participants. Must be able to communicate clearly, connect with the audience and encourage their active participation.
- Ability to established credibility with physicians and physician leaders across the province in order to influence changes in behavior related to billing.
- Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
- Ability to manage competing and concurrent priorities and tasks effectively and work under extremely tight time frames.
