**About this Job**

The Communications + Media Relations Advisor is a critical role within Lakehead University's Communications + Marketing team, responsible for developing and executing strategic communications and media relations plans to enhance the university’s reputation locally, provincially, nationally, and internationally in alignment with the university’s strategic plan and priorities.

**Job Duties**

This position will be responsible for:
A. Strategic Communications
- Develop and implement comprehensive strategic communications plans.
- Recommend and implement tactics for communication improvements.
- Contribute to the university’s communications and marketing strategy and annual plan.
- Build and maintain positive relationships with internal and external partners.
- Generate and pitch ideas and write high-quality stories for various audiences including internal communications. Write and edit communications content including key messages, news releases, speaking remarks, newsletters, blogs, web writing, and social media content.
- Ensure all communications adhere to the university’s brand standards.
- Manage the production of communications materials from inception to completion.
- Stay updated on emerging trends in communications and higher education.
- Collaborate with internal partners to deliver effective internal communications and employee engagement activities.

B. Media Relations
- Develop media relations plans to enhance the university’s reputation.
- Build relationships with internal partners to source unique stories for media opportunities.
- Identify opportunities to profile university experts.
- Liaise with decentralized communications leads to ensure consistency in public-facing materials.
- Develop media materials such as news releases, media pitches, and key messages.
- Respond to media inquiries and manage information flow for media responses.
- Provide media training and coaching to institutional spokespeople.
- Maintain media contact lists and monitor media coverage.
- Organize media events and manage media Q&As.

C. Issues Management Crisis Communications and Administration:

- Support the AVP Communications and Marketing in crisis communications and issues management.
- Monitor and flag potential issues and prepare briefing materials.
- Develop and maintain key messages and issue notes.
- Track and document issues and the university’s responses.
- Assist in managing budgets and administrative tasks related to the department’s operations.

**Qualifications and Skills**:

- Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, journalism, public relations, or a related field.
- Minimum of five to seven years of relevant experience
- Experience in the public or post-secondary sectors is an asset.
- Commitment to justice, equity, diversity, inclusion, and reconciliation.
- Advanced writing, editing, and presentation skills.
- Ability to communicate complex information clearly.
- Expertise in integrated communications plans and media relations campaigns.
- Strong problem-solving, critical thinking, time management and decision-making skills.
- Ability to operate in dynamic environments and prioritize work.

**Working Conditions**:
