The Environmental Manager is responsible for managing the mill’s laboratories and ensuring quality control of pulp products. In addition, the Environmental Manager directs the mill’s environmental program and is the mill’s principal liaison with environmental regulatory bodies at all levels of government, ensuring all testing, reporting and communication requirements are met.

**Responsibility**

General Management
- As a member of the Mill Management Team, participates in the leadership of the overall business of the mill.
- Provides support to the development and implementation strategic and operational plans for the mill.
- Monitors and analyzes emerging environmental issues as they relate to the mill and leads the completion of projects/initiatives related to the department which are identified to be corporate priorities
- Implements department safety programs and mill-wide safety programs for transportation of dangerous goods, WHMIS, asbestos management and industrial hygiene programs to ensure compliance and employee safety.

Testing and Quality Control
- Provides support for quality control, to ensure that the pulp produced meets the customer's specifications
- Ensures R&D mill activities are carried out in accordance with corporate guidelines.
- Establishes, implements and ensures the effective communication of operating parameters and final customer specifications for new and existing customers.
- Identifies opportunities to improve quality, increase production and reduce costs. Works towards continuous process improvement

Quality Systems
- As Management Representative for the quality system, is responsible for establishing, implementing, and maintaining the effectiveness of the Quality system in accordance with ISO 14001-9001 standards; including product and customer specifications, internal auditing, and management review.

Environment
- Develops and leads the environmental programs, including the operation of the treatment system to ensure compliance with regulations and enhance environmental performance.
- Directs monitoring and reporting of regulated environmental parameters. Negotiates and establishes environmental permits
- Develops environmental action plans and contingency plans for environmental emergencies. Acts as on-site coordinator for environmental emergencies and advises on process and equipment changes.

Staff Management
- Provides leadership to the team and fosters an environment which motivates the team to fully use its capabilities in achieving desired business results.
- Establishes and clearly defines responsibility for staff on the team and ensures the ongoing management and support of staff and effective employee performance.
- Leads, mentors and motivates supervisors and engineers for human resource excellence. Develops and maintains a favourable employee relations climate based on fair, firm, open and consistent administration of the Collective Agreement.
- Has willingness to initiate and embrace change and lead the Environmental Department.

Financial Management
- Develops departmental budgets, prioritizes spending, and advises senior management on cost over-runs and extraordinary equipment requisitions.
- Ensures department cost statements are effectively utilized and analyzed at all levels of the department.
- Identifies and justifies projects for reducing costs, improving quality and increasing production.

External Relationships
- Manages relationships and interactions with governmental and regulatory bodies, customers, consultants and other key stakeholders.
- Develops and leads a customer service program to ensure their expectations are met or exceeded and inquiries are answered promptly.

**Qualifications**
- The position requires twelve to fifteen years of industry experience resulting in an in-depth knowledge of pulp process, environmental and quality requirements.
- Solid analytical and quantitative abilities, problem solving and decision making skills. capabilities with the skill to draw appropriate conclusions and presentations
- A strategic thinker with the ability to manage complexity; able to balance the big picture with the details
- Excellent leadership and team building skills. Able to recruit, develop and retain high calibre people
- The incumbent must have demonstrated management and leadership skill and ability to effectively deal with government affairs and to motivate employees to achieve established objectives.
- Expertise in the industry including project management and operations management;
- Ideally have experience working within global, multinational company;
- Strong interpersonal skills, comfortable in a small team environment and interacting with senior level executives;
- Excellent written, verbal, listening and presentation skills;
- Solid technical skills combined with excellent project management and strategic skills;
