**Job Summary**:
The Counsellor is a key position within our frontline services team and as we are a growing team, there
is a good likelihood to move into a permanent position after the one year. In this position you will
primarily focus on providing ongoing support for the mental health and wellbeing of children and some
support of their non-offending caregivers, services are provided only to children and families referred by
Sophie’s Place partners through the VP of Sophie’s Place.
As a critical member of our multi-disciplinary team, you will be responsible for providing counselling
services for children and youth while actively collaborating with colleagues from other disciplines to
support the healing and resilience of our clients.
This is a unique opportunity for someone who is passionate about making a difference in the lives of
children, youth, and families, working directly with clients and colleagues to take on the impacts of
trauma in the early stages of recovery.
**Job responsibilities**:
- Assessing the needs of the clients.
- Conduct individual counselling sessions tailored to the unique needs of children and youth who have
experienced trauma.
- Participate in case formulations, team meetings, and clinical supervision to discuss client progress,
treatment plans, and interdisciplinary interventions.
- Work closely with team members from healthcare, police, child protection, victim services, and other
community partners to provide holistic wrap-around care for children.
- Utilize Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) and other evidence-based practices
to address the specific challenges faced by children and youth who have experienced abuse.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of innovative programs and interventions that
enhance the quality of mental health services for children and youth.
- Provide regular reporting of Sophie’s Place children served to the VP of Sophie’s Place as required
by the VP of Sophie’s Place.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date client records, ensuring compliance with ethical and legal
standards, and deliver standardized reports on performance outcomes and statistics.
- Participate in ongoing professional development to stay up to date around the latest counselling
techniques, theories, and interventions in child and youth mental health.
- Work in accordance with the policies and procedures of The Centre.
**Qualifications, Skills & Ability Requirements**
- Master’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counselling, or a related field.
- Sound knowledge of child and adolescent development and child and adolescent trauma.
- Training in, or willingness to obtain training in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF- CBT).
- At least 2 years of experience in a similar position working with children from diverse racial, ethnic,
and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Exceptional communication and active listening skills.
- Ability to outline strategies to maintain resilience.
- Ability to work both independently and work cooperatively within our multi-disciplinary team
environment.
- Strong planning and organizational skills.
- Good computer and administrative skills.
- Passionate about working in an organization that values and promotes diversity, equity, inclusion,
and anti-racism.
- Ability to provide culturally sensitive, trauma-informed services.
- Dedication, compassion, and drive to make a difference for vulnerable children, families and the
community.
- Knowledge of Indigenous culture would be considered an asset.
- Registered or eligible to register with BC’s Crime Victim Assistance Program
- Criminal Record Review acceptable to the Centre
- Available vehicle and a valid BC Driver's License
- Available to work occasional evenings and Saturdays
