Operator ll - Paved Roads and Road Services
The Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of Heavy Equipment of the road rehabilitation and maintenance activities. Reporting to the Transportation Supervisor, the Operator works independently and/or with a crew engaged in the maintenance of the County’s roads (paved or gravel). The Operator Series is a growth position that allows for incumbents to develop their knowledge, skills and experience in the role over time with the expectation that training on different pieces of equipment be welcomed.
The primary responsibilities of this position are to support the summer and winter operations by being flexible in assisting with labour tasks, changing work hours between November and May of each year, and operating/working in the following capacity but not limited to:
**Winter**: Operation of the single/tandem axle snowplow, 1 ton with pintle and gooseneck trailers, skid steers, loaders, and 1 ton sanding truck.
**Summer**: Operation of single and tandem axle trucks, 1 ton with pintle and gooseneck trailers, skid steers with attachments, loaders, spray patch unit, various powered hand tools such as chainsaws, augers etc. May also receive training on the picker truck and woodchipper.
Must work effectively and efficiently with others and alone with little or no supervision, always be punctual, communicate openly, take direction well, and respond to public inquiries in a calm and friendly manner.
The ability to safely operate various small power tools and heavy equipment by taking precautions to avoid incident. Knowledge of servicing the equipment assigned would be an asset. Work is performed at various outdoor work sites within the County.
Exhibit initiative and good judgment in loading, hauling, and unloading all types and sizes of materials, supplies, machines and equipment. Knowledge of approved methods of transporting, including loading, unloading, towing, and winching operations.
Exhibit the knowledge and ability in the maintenance and servicing of the equipment or vehicles. Ability to tarp and tie down loads when required.
**Qualifications**:
- Considerable experience in the operation of heavy-duty equipment or several different types of automotive equipment used for the maintenance and construction of roads or other related duties.
- Valid Class 3 Driver’s License with Q endorsement accompanied with an acceptable 5-year commercial drivers abstract.
- Work may be performed in extreme temperatures or high levels of noise. Physical job requirements: May require lifting and carrying of up to 23kg, shoveling, bending, twisting, kneeling, squatting, crawling, exposure to outdoor conditions, dust, and fumes, and working near equipment. Complete other duties as required by supervisor. Availability to work overtime when required.
- Defensive Driving.
- Ground Disturbance Safety Training Level 1.
- Standard First Aid and CPR.
- Safety training in the following areas: National Safety Codes, Pre-trip Inspection, Flag Person Training Course, Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG), Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), Forklift Operator Certification, Coupling/Uncoupling, Cargo Securement - Rigging and Slinging, Crane and Hoisting Equipment Operator - Boom Truck, Chainsaw Safety, Fire Extinguisher, Overhead Powerline, Customer Service.
Training in the above noted areas may be provided upon hire however are considered an asset.
