The Seabird Island Band is a multi-faceted First Nations Band that includes government, business, service, and nonprofit services. We work as an integrated team to improve the health, education, and economic opportunities for First Nations people to create thriving First Nations families and communities.

**Position Summary**:
Reporting to the Director of Inter-Governmental Affairs, the Cultural Support Worker will assist with the development and delivery of cultural and community projects and programs that integrate traditional teachings which balances the mental, emotional, spiritual and physical aspects of culture for Seabird Island Band. The Cultural Support Worker will work closely with the Sq’ep (Culture and Language) Committee, Community Services, Recreation, administration, and community.

Purpose of this position is to:

- To support the incorporation of the Seabird and Sto:lo Culture and Traditions into all aspects of the of activities, events and administration
- To work with the Cultural Advisor and Sq’ep Committee to ensure celebration and ceremonies adhere to cultural protocol.
- To promote and develop cultural and traditional activities
- To promote the Traditional and Cultural teachings
- To work closely with the Community Services Department (Recreation, Events, and Communications)

**Qualifications/Requirements**:

- Post-secondary education in First Nations Studies, Cultural Resource Management, anthropology/archaeology, museums studies or other related social science;
- A minimum of 3 years’ experience in community-based, First Nations culturally focused role; or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Experience working in a First Nations setting.
- A demonstrated personal attributed view of First Nations traditions, culture and community issues.
- Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
- Previous experience working with children, youth, adults, elders, families and the overall community in cultural facilitation and instruction is preferred.
- Knowledge of Stó:lō and Sq’ep culture, traditions and language is required.
- Knowledgeable of Federal and Provincial cultural and language programs.
- Knowledge of First Nation communities, organizations and service providers within the area.
- Knowledge of Seabird Island culture, traditions, history is required
- Knowledgeable of language and cultural resources
- Familiar with weaving, cedar work, beading, painting, drum making, carving or other art mediums.
- Knowledge of traditional herbs, medicines, and other uses of local flora.
- Working knowledge of Halq’emeylem language or a willingness to learn.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to adhere to Oath of Confidentiality and Seabird Island Band Policies and Procedure.
- Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License, and reliable vehicle required.
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check.
- Class 4 driver’s license, is considered an asset.

**Primary Responsibilities**:

- Assist with the coordination and set up of workshops and cultural events.
- Assists with the coordination of events for all programs and departments ensuring they are culturally appropriate as requested. Facilitate and coordinate internal event planning and execution.
- Recruits language course participants for staff and community programs.
- Facilitates training sessions for Band/Community members, employees and volunteers regarding culturally appropriate practices (ie: handling cedar, ceremonies, burnings, brushing, and other practices).
- Assists with planning fundraising events.
- Promotes sharing of traditional practices.
- Supports Cultural Committees including organizing meetings, taking and distributing minutes, preparing materials, and other administrative tasks.
- Researching and documenting traditions, customs, teachings, and other areas arising from meetings.
- Liaising with partners (internally and externally).
- Complete administrative tasks including proposal writing and grant reporting.
- Prepare annual reports and provide accurate reports and data upon request.
- Develops, and maintains an appropriate record and filing information systems. Maintains a historic records system for community and education use.
- Work with the Records Management Program to maintain an inventory of the Band’s resources and artifacts.
- Assist in designing and coordination of activities that meet the cultural needs of the community, families, individuals and staff.
- Connect Elders and youth to the language and culture programs.
