Job Summary
The McDonald Institute at Queen’s University is seeking a scientific-minded individual with a people-first approach to management, for the position of Managing Director (MD). The MD is responsible for executing on the strategic direction of the Institute, including creating a collaborative environment that brings staff, researchers, government, and other stakeholders together for the purpose of conducting astroparticle physics research. To be successful in the role, the incumbent will need to be collaborative, strategic, and knowledgeable in the field of scientific research, with a background in project and team leadership.
The position is a continuing appointment reporting to the Scientific Director of the MI. As a premier research institute at Queen’s University, the MD’s appointment is within the Vice-Principal Research Portfolio. The incumbent will leverage centralized administrative resources in addition to managing specialized personnel to support the McDonald Institute’s strategic direction. The MD role may include supporting other initiatives with the purview of the Vice-Principal Research in a similar capacity based on operational needs.
The McDonald Institute, was founded on the Nobel Prize winning research by Dr. Arthur McDonald conducted at the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory, and has grown into a diverse multi-institutional, world leading hub for research in the field. The MD will have the autonomy to use their creative and strategic acumen to realize opportunities and address challenges, ensuring this will be a challenging and rewarding opportunity. Additionally, this will be an interesting opportunity for anyone passionate about science, as they will be on the forefront of answers to interesting scientific questions, such as how the universe began, where is it going, and how it works. This opportunity has the potential to evolve as the VPR Strategic Initiative portfolio expands over time.

**Job Description**:
**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES**:
**Strategic Leadership**:
- Work with the Scientific Director to identify and respond to new opportunities aligned with the goals of The McDonald Institute.
- Work with the Scientific Director to position the Institute and its programs such that they will be sustainable beyond the initial seven-year period of funding from CFREF, including the envisioning and drafting of new funding proposals
**Administrative and Operational Leadership**:
- Provide leadership and guidance to the administrative, financial and program management of all Institute activities.
- Create a community wide working environment that is respectful, collaborative and productive.
- Develop and provide supporting materials, implement schedules and agendas and follow-up action plans for all committee meetings and events.
- Maintain a complete database of all program relevant information including: funding history for the field, career trajectories of highly qualified personnel, publications, citations, innovations, patents, outreach activities, schools, conferences and workshops supported and scientific milestones realized.
- Ensure that Institute-supported activities are aligned with the priorities of the program for social and economic impact.
**Financial Management and Accountability**
Working with the Scientific Director:
Develop and manage the McDonald Institute budgets in all areas of responsibility.
- Oversee and support all agency statistical, operational, and financial reporting.
- Oversee and support all agency financial and compliance audits.
- Ensure ethical conduct, integrity and a high degree of professionalism and accountability in all business, financial and research activities.
**Partnership Development, Partner Relations and EDII**
- In close cooperation with the Scientific Director and the Director of Strategic Initiatives and Institutional Programs, ensure a continued smooth integration into the Department of Physics, Engineering Physics and Astronomy, and develop strong relationships with other Queen’s University departments and faculties, Institute partners, funders and participants and promote collaboration and networking among these groups.
