Research Technician

Position: Research Technician

Structa Wire Corp is leading wire products manufacturer with a heavy emphasis on engineering and design. For the past 25 years the company has maintained an engineering team for the development of proprietary construction materials and in parallel the machine design and technology to make products on state-of-the-art machinery. Several new innovative projects are presently underway, and the Research Technician will be contributing valuable work to advance the technical knowledge in these areas.

The Research Technician will participate in a very active engineering team at Structa Wire. Technical projects and testing provide the company with empirically based test results which lead to strategic improvements in the features and benefits of our proprietary product line.

The Director, Research and Development, and a senior consulting engineer for the company will guide and monitor the work of the Research Technician. The activity for this position includes the following responsibilities:

- Carry out the research activities for the company under direction of senior management
- Compose the narratives for SRED projects including annual project objectives, quarterly progress and status reports, and all other documentation as required.
- Work with all departments including engineering, maintenance and production in carrying out experiments and developing prototypes.
- As needed supervise and manage engineering coop students in their assigned projects and experiments.
- Provide ideas for ongoing improvements and innovations and participate in weekly think tank meetings
- Work with outside laboratories when conducting testing and activities beyond internal capability
- Assist in the preparation of technical presentations for potential customers, architects, engineers
- Maintain certification and calibration program for all measurement instruments
- Perform internal environmental audits
- Perform verification tests on incoming raw material, as required.
- Become knowledgeable about government research grants, specifically SRED, IRAP

Our in-house lab contains the following equipment: Resistance spot and seam welding machines, weld monitoring equipment, oscilloscopes, tensile testing machines, transverse load test equipment (wind load), an ASTM B117 salt spray chamber, microscopes, precision weigh scales and measurement equipment. Drawing software includes Auto Cad and Solid Works. In previous years, various research projects utilized an ASTM C1363 Hot Box Apparatus, and a Monotonic shear racking facility.

The following Skills are required for this position.
- Keen observation skills are necessary to accumulate accurate and valid test results.
- Well organized and detail oriented. Test results and other pertinent data are entrusted in the care and stewardship of the Research Assistant.
- Verbal and written presentation skills. Each week the Research Technician will be asked to make a short presentation to management to report on the status of ongoing work. Written interim project reports including test program details, objectives, and results will be required.

The following skills are highly beneficial in this position.
- Conducting topical research from libraries and journals to provide our group with up to date technical and scientific information.
- Ability to draw in cad format for the purpose of generating basic detail drawings of test specimens and test apparatus.
- Construction skills (carpentry and light mechanical assembly) to assist in the fabrication of test specimens and test apparatus.
- Familiarity with lab equipment.

**Salary**: $55,000.00-$65,000.00 per year
