Lac Ste. Anne Métis Community Association (“LSAMCA”) is an independent, vibrant Métis community whose traditional territory encompasses west central and northwest Alberta. With a strong sense of community and cultural identity and the recent recognition of our section 35 rights by the Province of Alberta, LSAMCA is actively involved in protecting the rights and interests of our members through participating in consultation and regulatory activities in our traditional territory. LSAMCA provides direct supports to its members through investments in education, training, housing, and social programs funded by our involvement in sustainable economic development activities.
Reporting to the President of LSAMCA, the Consultation and Regulatory Lead acts as a liaison between project proponents and operators, government departments and agencies, and LSAMCA as this concerns activities associated with regulatory and consultation matters, and with a view to ensuring appropriate protection of LSAMCA members’ Métis rights and interests.
KEY TASKS
- Responsible for Monitoring of Provincial and Federal Regulatory Time Frames and Deadlines, and Ensuring Timely and Appropriate Responses to Formal Notifications
- Responsible for Relationship Building with Relevant Government of Alberta and Industry Representatives
- Responsible for Maintaining Knowledge of New Provincial and Federal Legislation, Policies and Regulations pertaining to the Duty to Consult
- Responsible for Recruiting and Supporting Technical Consultants, when required.
- Responsible for Leading Development of Internal Consultation Protocols/Guidelines
- Responsible for Overseeing the Day-to-day Operations of the LSAMCA Consultation Office, including Internal Database Organization and Maintenance
- Responsible for Recruiting and Overseeing Staff to Support the Operational Needs of the LSAMCA Consultation Office, where appropriate
- Responsible to Work in Collaboration with Accounting Personnel on Financial Reporting for the LSAMCA Consultation Office
- Responsible for Capacity Building and Grant Writing, where Appropriate
- Responsible for Coordinating and/or Supporting Traditional Use / Indigenous Knowledge Studies and the Collection of Land and Resource Use Information
- Responsible for Supporting, LSAMCA Community-based Monitoring Activities, where Appropriate
- Responsible for Supporting Impact Benefit Agreement Negotiations, where Appropriate
QUALIFICATIONS
- Degree in Indigenous Studies, Geography, Anthropology, Biology, Geographic Information Systems, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Demonstrated understanding of self-determination principles pertaining to Indigenous research.
Three (3) or more years’ experience in matters related to Indigenous Knowledge or Traditional Use.
Five (5) or more years’ experience in matters related to Indigenous consultation related to Provincial Processes.
Familiarity with Provincial and Federal approaches to consultation and engagement with Indigenous peoples.
High level of competency with computer software, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills, and strengths in active listening.
Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with a variety of external contacts.
Ability to record accurate notes, action items and recording keeping.
Knowledge of Metis rights and Lac Ste. Anne Métis history.
Proven planning, prioritizing, organizing and coordination skills and a track record for successfully meeting formal deadlines.
Other assets you may bring to the table that are preferred, but not required:
- GIS certification (ESRI ArcGIS, or other).
- Experience with grant writing.
