Saltwater Husbandry Technician - Egg Take

Cermaq Canada is currently seeking to fill more than one permanent full-time Saltwater Husbandry Technician position for our saltwater operations around Vancouver Island. You will be hired to work at our broodstock facility during the annual egg harvesting then transition to other farms to continue your career. We provide company paid bus and boat transport from communities on the East Coast of the island to our broodstock farm, Cypress Island. You get a uniform, personal protective equipment and food supplied in camp during your shift.

You would start your career with a unique perspective on salmon farming by working with the ‘parents’, our brood fish to create the next generation of salmon.
- You need to be physically fit to assist with spawning-related tasks - they are very big fish
- When the fish are ready to spawn, you and your team work to harvest eggs and milt that go to our land-based hatcheries.
- After egg harvesting called ‘egg take season’, you are transferred to a regular production site in the Broughton Area or Tofino (again, we have transportation to site for you).
- Your site might be getting ready to receive fish from a hatchery, called smolt, growing out the fish for future harvesting or doing harvests now.
- You also monitor fish activity, conduct environmental monitoring and sampling activities to ensure proper fish welfare
- You work to maintain a clean, safe, and biosecure site by performing simple maintenance, site set-up and closing sites after harvest
- You learn how to safely operate heavy machinery such as boats and capstan winches or forklifts

Position Requirements
- Although prior experience is nice, we will train you
- You want to work outdoors in any weather while being comfortable on the ocean
- Come with a positive mindset, be flexible about what you need to do each day
- A team player, gets along great with others and are always looking to lend a hand
- Ability to work independently, without supervision; you take initiative and work to keep yourself and your team safe each day.
