Our Women & Family Services Advocates are an important component of the organizations' resources, supporting women and families who have been hurt by violence and abuse.

At Huron Women’s Shelter, Second Stage Housing and Counselling Services (HWS), we use a feminist, anti-oppressive, trauma-informed framework to deliver prevention, education and crisis support services to women and their families who have been impacted by violence and abuse in Huron County. Our services include a 24-hour helpline and emergency shelter, Second Stage Housing, risk assessment and safety planning, advocacy, system navigation, individual and group healing opportunities, and community development.

Summary:
Reporting to the Residential Manager and working closely with the Women and Family Services Team, Advocates are accountable to create a safe and supportive environment for women and families impacted by violence and abuse to seek help.

What you would bring to the role:

- Social Service Worker Diploma or equivalent required, Bachelor of Social Work degree or equivalent post-secondary education preferred.
- Fluency in other languages would be welcomed and considered an asset
- A minimum of two (2) years’ experience working in the Violence Against Women (VAW) sector; preference given to those with counselling experience supporting women who have experienced Gender-based Violence.
- Your experience working with women and children in a shelter setting would be welcome and considered an asset.
- Your excellent conflict resolution skills, including the ability to facilitate difficult conversations where required
- Your ability to act as an advocate, strong ability for case planning and effective ability to provide child/women-centered practice delivery
- Your outstanding communication, listening and assessment skills
- You demonstrate organizational abilities and exceptional customer service skills
- Your ability to provide a clear current police vulnerable sector check
- Your current CPR (Level C) and First Aid Certifications (or by date of hire)

How you would know you are a good fit:

- You have a solid understanding of feminism, the women’s movement, anti-racism/anti-oppression, and trauma informed practice.
- You demonstrate mentorship and leadership ability in alignment with our organization’s philosophy of growth and development of staff and our programs
- You demonstrate women’s advocacy skills, strong case planning skills and effective child/women-centered practice delivery.

What we would offer (a more detailed job description will be provided when invited to interview for the role):

- Responsibility for managing the day to day running of the shelter, including providing support services to residents of the shelter and members of the community. Your ability to shine as an advocate, providing crisis support on the 24-hour phone lines.
