**Hours of Work**: FTE (36 hrs/avg. week); PTE (20 hrs/avg. week); Casual

**Reports to**: Executive Director

**Job Summary**

The Transition House _Support Worker_ provides support, security, advocacy, information, education, supportive counseling, crisis intervention and referrals to clients. The Transition
House _Support Worker_ works collaboratively in a team environment and independently to ensure comprehensive and coordinated service provision, following the mission, vision, goals and policies and procedures of the Amata Transition House Society.

**Duties & Responsibilities**

1. Screens prospective clients for suitability for the program and makes referrals to other programs or agencies as requested/required. Conducts intake interviews and orients and assists residents to settle in the house.

2. Assesses clients’ immediate needs, identifies associated barriers related to violence, and assists clients to define and implement an action plan. Monitors and documents client’s progress and ensures follow-up.

3. Provides information to clients on resources available and recommends and/or refers to appropriate in-house and community programs and services. Maintains current knowledge of issues and resources related to abuse and violence.

4. Provides emotional support, encouragement, life skills training, goal setting and problem solving support to clients. Facilitates in-house and/or support group meetings.

5. Collaborates with supervisor, co-workers and clients to plan, organize, and coordinate work activities to meet the needs of clients.

6. Documents and maintains records, forms, statistics as needed. Produces reports as required.

7. Ensures housekeeping services such as answering the door and telephones, providing linens, doing laundry, accepting and dispensing donations, screening and distributing mail,

housecleaning, rotating supplies, preparing/organizing meals and clean-up, responding to routine enquiries, organizing household repairs, performing minor maintenance tasks and/or informing appropriate person of maintenance or repairs.

8. Participates in case conferences, assessment, goal setting and advocacy and support planning with clients and staff. Updates client file information as needed.

9. Monitors and ensures the safety and comfort of clients and the security of the facility.

Facilitates resolution of conflicts between clients.

10. Performs fire checks and safety drills, attends to safety and fire concerns and provides house orientation and emergency training as requested.

11. May be required to orient and assign duties to workers in training, volunteers and practicum students.

12. Performs other related duties as required.

**Skills & Abilities**

1. Ability to assess clients for program suitability and provide ongoing advocacy and support.

2. Works from a non-judgmental, feminist and anti-oppression perspective and understands the dynamics of violence against women and children and related interventions, supports and services available both generally and locally.

3. Has a developed understanding of and an ability and willingness to work with clients with multiple and intersectional barriers associated with abuse and violence against women and children including but not limited to poverty, sexual exploitation, mental heath concerns, substance use, cultural dispossession and safe and affordable housing.

4. Well developed organizational, time management, communication, record keeping, report writing and interpersonal skills.

5. Applies conflict resolution, crisis management, flexibility, decision-making and critical thinking skills. Ability to give and receive constructive feedback and learn from experiences

**Knowledge & Qualifications**

1. A working knowledge of violence against women and children and the dynamics, interventions, and services involved.

2. Knowledge of local, provincial and federal programs and services available including but not limited to social, legal, housing, health, mental health, substance use, counseling, children & child protection, employment and education.

3. Cultural proficiency and ability to work with women and children from various cultural groups and an awareness of the generational impact of colonialism.

**Education & Training**

Diploma in a related human / social service field; one (1) year recent related experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

**Additional Requirements**

Must have a valid driver’s license, access to a vehicle while on shift and vehicle insurance; be bondable for the position; have a Food Safe and Occupational First Aid Certificate; provide TB test results; have an acceptable Criminal Record Check for working with children and vu
