Reporting to the Director, Noth American Gas Operations, as** **the Safety Advisor you are responsible for ensuring that our business operations consistently meet and exceed all safety, health, and hygiene regulatory requirements, industry standards, and internal safety policies and standards. This is a full-time, safety-sensitive site-based position located at our cogeneration facility in Sarnia, Ontario. **WHAT YOU WILL DO** - Create, foster, and maintain a proactive safety culture for our Gas Fleet - Proactively identify plans to reduce hazards, hazard exposures, and hazardous activities that pose a significant risk to the organization - Ensure that safety policies, standards, and procedures are maintained at our Gas Operations facilities - Provide expert advice on safety systems, trends, response actions, and interpretation of health and safety regulations - Develop the programs and initiatives to build and sustain a safety culture that becomes a "way of life" for employees and contractors, including mentoring, coaching, advising, and supporting safety inspections by Local management - Ensure activities are conducted according to area-specific Health and Safety systems - Monitor and report on critical program activities and key performance indicators - Ensure major maintenance outages are conducted in accordance to developed Turnaround Safety Management Plans for the outages - Ensure contractor safety plans are reviewed and acknowledged prior to work commencement - Ensure all Safety training meets TransAlta’s requirement and is consistent with Ontario and Alberta OH&S Act and Regulations by keeping abreast of changes in the acts and regulations - Ensure all Safety training meets TransAlta’s requirement and is consistent with Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Act (MIOSHA)and Regulations by keeping abreast of changes in the acts and regulations **WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU** **Certifications** - Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), or equivalent professional safety designation desirable - Degree, diploma, or certificate in Occupational Health and Safety from a recognized Post-secondary Institution, or equivalent combination of experience - NCSO and CHSC certification - Expertise in developing and implementing Health & Safety Management Systems - 3-7 years of progressively responsible experience in occupational health and safety in an industrial facility or industrial construction environment **Qualifications** - Possess a broad knowledge of health and safety regulations - Demonstrated understanding of operations safety and process safety - Experience with contractor safety management and practices - Experience in safety aspects related to power plant operations - Thorough knowledge of safety theory and practice, particularly in the areas of heavy industry - Confidence and ability to interact and influence workers and contractors - Knowledge of what constitutes a strong safety culture and how to sustain and demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement and innovation - Well-developed analytical skills - A customer-centric mentality to support internal customers; ability to build and maintain effective relationships across a diverse set of key - Demonstrated capability in developing, implementing, managing, and mentoring TransAlta’s safety standards and policies - Strong communication skills with the ability to communicate to external sources as requirements - Ability to conduct and support incident investigations - Ensure that administrative systems are in place and functioning for the tracking and reporting of workers' training activities - Ensure quality EHS training is available and meets site requirements **OTHER REQUIREMENTS** - Ability to travel to our sites across North America as required - Successful completion of pre-employment testing is a condition of employment Our comprehensive and flexible benefits, competitive compensation, incentive, and rewards programs form the foundation of TransAlta’s excellent employment proposition.
