The Ministry of Energy and Minerals is responsible for sustaining the interests of Albertans through the stewardship and responsible development of energy and mineral resource system.

The Energy Policy Division is responsible for energy, mines, and minerals policy development and program design. It engages with a wide variety of resource development partners including various levels of government, industry, and a wide spectrum of Alberta communities and Indigenous Peoples.

The Resource Development Policy Branch under the Energy Policy Division leads sub-surface tenure, royalty, and regulatory policy development across Alberta’s upstream subsurface natural resources sectors. The sectors include oil sands, oil and gas, coal, minerals, geothermal, and subsurface injection (i.e., oilfield disposal, and carbon sequestration).

The Policy Analyst, Resource Development Policy this position supports the development of initiatives and policies to assist Alberta in ensuring the continued prosperity, competitiveness, and development of the province’s vast energy resources.

In this role, the Policy Analyst will amongst other duties perform:

- Policy Review and implementation: Support Sub-surface energy and mineral policy development across Alberta's downstream and emerging resources sectors, leasing and maintaining crown mineral petroleum and natural gas rights as well as policies related to calculating, assessing, and reconciling revenues from natural gas, conventional oil, oil sands, natural gas liquids, coal, and other metallic and industrial minerals. Analyze legislative and regulatory framework related to energy and mineral resources, and subsurface reservoir tenures.
- Research & Advisory: Independently conduct market analysis and research, planning, and provide recommendations to support policy development, decision-making and legislative commitments.
- Project Co-ordination: Co-ordinate key initiatives and projects participated in by the Division or Branch. Schedule, document and track project updates and activities and ensure timely reporting to branch leadership.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Participate in meetings and workshops with stakeholders and evaluation of stakeholder responses considering recommendations. Participate in joint government - industry meetings and taskforces within the oil and natural gas industry ensuring that discussions and proposals are consistent with policies and regulations of the department. Support other units within the branch as needed.
- Reporting: Prepare high quality internal discussion papers, reports, and briefing materials to facilitate decision-making, public engagement, and stakeholder communication.
