Sustainability Projects Coordinator

The Alma Mater Society (AMS) is the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) student society, and works to improve the academic, social and personal lives of the 56,000 UBC students at its Vancouver campus. The AMS also runs nine food and beverage outlets, a catering and conference operation, and the AMS Student Nest, providing on-campus employment opportunities and generating revenue that goes directly back into supporting the students at UBC.
**Position title**: Sustainability Projects Coordinator
**Reports to**: Vice President, Administration & Associate Vice-President, Sustainability
**Supervises**: Sustainability Volunteers
**Employee status**: Hourly Exempt, Appointed
**Length of term**: Until April 30, 2026
**Hours per week**: 15 hours per week
**Compensation**: $19.00 per hour
Position Purpose
The Sustainability Projects Coordinator will assist the Associate Vice President, Sustainability in the initiation and implementation of projects as well as internal projects that improve and measure the success of the AMS Sustainable Action Plan (ASAP). They are responsible for liaising with campus groups that take part in sustainability projects. In addition, the Sustainability Projects Coordinator is in charge of maintain the current projects within AMS spaces and ensuring the reparation of any deficiencies.
They are also responsible for engaging with various AMS subsidiary organizations to encourage them to take on sustainability initiatives and tracking their progress on ongoing initiatives. In addition, they are in charge of reaching out to on-campus or off-campus organizations that can add to the sustainability initiatives of the AMS.
**Responsibilities**:
- Maintain sustainability projects and programs as directed by the Associate Vice President, Sustainability
- Assist with student research projects (working with SEEDS, interested staff, faculty and graduate students) as directed by the Associate Vice President, Sustainability
- Hire, train and manage coordinators or volunteers to help implement projects such as SEEDS initiatives, ISC programming, and more
- Assist the Associate Vice President, Sustainability in conducting evaluation of SEEDS projects and other sustainable initiatives
- Sits on the Sustainability Project Fund Subcommittee and attend the Finance Committee for SPF-related matters as needed
- Organize engagement and outreach activities (such as workshops or documentary screenings) to encourage and promote sustainability within the membership
- Promote AMS Sustainability at various campus sustainability related events by boothing or other means of attendance and engagement (For example, the Sustainability Fair, Farmade, etc,)
- Engage with AMS subsidiary organizations to help encourage sustainable operations and events
- Build partnerships and work with student groups, clubs and resource groups
- Attend meetings of UBC-affiliated student sustainability groups and clubs as required
- Works with the AMS mission statement and values to operate a successful department
- Other duties as required
Qualifications and Experience
- Must be a currently registered student at UBC Vancouver or one of its affiliated colleges
- May not be an executive of an AMS club, constituency or resource group
- Knowledge of and passion for environmental, social, and economic sustainability issues and campus environmental programs
- Experience in policy implementation is an asset
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Experience coordinating volunteers
- Strong initiative and able to work with mínimal supervision
- Able to work individually and collaboratively
- Creative and flexible
- Facilitation skills an asset
- Comfortable working within an anti-oppression framework to create a positive space for everyone
- Understanding of the AMS organization and operations is an asset
