Sheridan Villa Long Term Care Volunteer

**Job Summary**

**Objective**: To support and compliment the centre’s programs and services in responding to resident’s/client’s strengths, needs and preferences.

**Location**:Sheridan Villa, 2460 Truscott Dr, Mississauga, ON. Volunteers are required to organize their own transportation.

**Commitment**: Minimum 60 hours, about 2-3 hours per week.

**Interaction Level**: Group setting and/or one on one

**Our Residents/Clients**:
Long-term care residents are typically people who need assistance managing their daily activities and/or need to be supervised due to Alzheimer's disease or another type of dementia. They live at the centre and receive care from staff.

**Responsibilities and Duties**
- **Activation Programs** (assisting the residents attending various programs including bingo, music, trivia, baking, crafts, games, gardening, etc.)
- **Tuck Shop** (selling basic items and snacks to residents/clients/family members and visitors)
- **Meal Time Assistance** (assisting residents/clients at meal times)
- **Outings** (accompanying residents/clients attending group outings such as shopping, restaurants and bowling)
- **Friendly visits** (interacting with residents/clients one on one and supporting them in a variety of activities, including reading, writing, games etc.)
- Ensure each resident/client is treated with respect and dignity and his/her choices and preferences are considered and respected at all times
- Provide Supervisor, Activation and Volunteer Services, with information on a regular basis (residents visited, participation level and length of visit)

**Qualifications and Skills**
- Demonstrate communication and interpersonal skills.
- Maintain a professional and confidential relationship regarding the resident/client.
- Maintain a supportive and respectful environment.
- Demonstrate teamwork.
- Convey empathy and compassion while practicing patience.

**Requirements**:

- Must be 14 years or older.
- Reference Check: Must provide two professional references that have known the applicant for at least 6 months (i.e. teacher, coach, previous volunteer/work supervisor etc.).
- Police Vulnerable Sector Check: Required before placement begins, and a signed declaration yearly there after
- Proof of 3 doses of the COVID-19 Vaccine
- Mantoux 2 Step TB test: Required before placement begins
- Orientation and Training: Mandatory Orientation and Training provided regarding Long Term Care Acts and Regulations and will include relevant policies and procedures. All volunteers will be provided with an orientation manual which includes the required information, general information, safety and security, emergency protocol and volunteer guidelines.
