**Position Summary**:
The Ophthalmic Technician working in the Eye Clinic at St. Mary’s General Hospital is a member of the interdisciplinary team assisting the Ophthalmologist in diagnosing and treating eye disorders and disease. They are responsible and accountable for patient care of the adult outpatient population, documentation as well as the flow of clinical activities on a daily basis. The Ophthalmic Technician is also responsible and accountable for the knowledgeable use and cleaning of all equipment utilized in the clinic.

**Technical Aspects**

- Carries out assigned procedures following all relevant policies.

- Accurately and clearly records all information on appropriate documents.

- Maintains all files.

- Notifies co-workers of unusual incidents.

- Notifies of needs for supplies according to the established “stores supplies” requisitions.

- Assists with the evaluation and selection of supplies.

**Quality Assurance**

- Assists with the ongoing Quality Assurance activities.

- Maintains all required Quality Assurance information for audits etc.

- Perform all work functions and tasks in accordance with the prescribed standards that focuses on the priority of People Safety and the delivery of the highest standard of Quality Care

**Equipment Maintenance**

- Ensures that all maintenance requisitions and documentation are complete.

- Notifies appropriate individual of needs for maintenance beyond personal scope of practice.

- Notifies appropriate individual of actual or impending breakdown that will require major repair or replacement.

- Communicates directly with maintenance equipment personnel to ensure smooth operation of digital photographic unit.

**Orientation and Training**

- Attends or participates in all programs for continuing education.

- Assists in the development of in-service programs for departmental staff, hospital staff.

- Alters appropriate communication and interpersonal skills to deal effectively with patients and their families, co-workers, physicians, volunteers and others within our health care community.

- Demonstrates values and a commitment to foster a healthy, supportive work environment dedicated to delivering a high quality care experience through compassion, innovation and respect.

- Other duties as assigned.

**Position Requirements**:
Completion of Ontario Secondary School diploma or equivalent as recognized in the province of Ontario

Current Ophthalmic Assistant Certificate or willingness to obtain in 18 months

Minimum 1 year experience as an Ophthalmic Assistant/Technician within a fast paced and busy setting

Current BCLS - must be maintained

Experience with computer systems

Evidence of ongoing professional development and continuing education

Demonstrate the physical and mental capabilities necessary for proper and efficient performance of the essential duties of the position

**Preference will be given to applicants with the following additional qualifications**:
JCAPHO certification (Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology)

Completion of a recognized Community College Photography Course

Laser Safety training/certification

Ability to work with precision instruments.

Experience and knowledge of equipment and procedures including Ophthalmic photography, tonometry, OCT, B Scan, Fluorescein Angiography, laser and retinal procedures and maintaining databases

Previous experience with LEAN methodologies
