As the Branch Head Librarian, you will have the exciting opportunity to manage a library and actively promote the services of Winnipeg Public Library for the City of Winnipeg. **As the **_Branch Head Librarian_**, you will**: - Supervise the work of the Branch staff including training and evaluating their performance - Plan and schedule the work within the Branch - Provide information and reference services to adults and children - Participate in collection maintenance and development, ensuring proper processing and repair of materials and book sale as required - Participate in the preparation, delivery and/or promotion of library materials, and services such as regular story hours, Branch programs, displays, etc. - Prepare monthly statistical reports - Make recommendations regarding the maintenance and physical appearance of the Branch - Handle contentious interpretations of library rules and regulations - Participate as a member of a group of colleagues in discussing and making recommendations regarding library procedures - Identify community needs and plan programs and collection development to meet those needs - Engage with the community to build Library awareness - Perform other duties consistent with the classification, as required **Your education and qualifications include**: - A Master of Library & Information Sciences (MLIS/MLS) degree from an institution accredited by the American Library Association (ALA). An MLIS degree (or equivalent) obtained internationally through a formally accredited institution may also be considered. - Previous library experience is an asset. - Demonstrated ability to plan and supervise the work of others - Thorough knowledge of library procedures and materials - Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing - Demonstrated ability to deal effectively with the public and staff - Good planning and organizational skills - Knowledge and understanding of the occupational hazards, safety precautions, regulations and procedures that are applicable to the area of work - Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization, external contacts and the public, in accordance with the Respectful Workplace Policy - Must have successfully completed the following courses, or be prepared to complete within one year: - “Foundations of Supervisory Development” or “Workplace Leader” - "Safety Responsibilities for Supervisors/Managers” - "Diversity in the Workplace - The Role of the Supervisor/Manager” **Conditions of employment**: - The successful applicant must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada.
