The Indigenous Recovery Coach Program—Aapai’tsi’taappii’saam—is now hiring a full-time Indigenous Recovery Coach. The Recovery Coach will specialize in co-facilitating the 12-step day treatment program, promoting traditional teachings. The recovery Coach will present informative material on goal setting and skill development while promoting healthy coping mechanisms through an Indigenous cultural lens.
This position will support a recovery-oriented, community-based and culturally-informed recovery coaching program for Indigenous adults starting or restarting recovery from opioid or methamphetamine use in Lethbridge. The program combines one-on-one community-based transition / navigator services with peer support services and culturally-focused healing.
The cultural wellness programming specialist will incorporate meaningful daily activities to promote Recovery through cultural wellness, for staff and participants. This individual will work with Team Leads and Program Management to co-design and facilitate cultural programming for the IRC.
Reporting to the Indigenous Recovery Coach Program Director, this position functions as part of a team, seeing participants from diverse First Nations, Métis, and Inuit (FNMI) populations. This position requires a professional who is committed and has a passion to work with people on a path of recovery. The Indigenous Recovery Coach uses a strength-based and person-centered approach, along with motivational interviewing, critical thinking, and decision making skills to provide supports to individuals working on recovery.
The Indigenous Recovery Coach will be responsible in developing and following a Recovery Plan to help meet participant needs. The Coach will work to expand supportive social contacts in a participant’s network; facilitate engagement in tangible resources to meet physical needs (e.g., stable housing and access to physical/mental health services); facilitate access to and engagement in Indigenous cultural and ceremonial activities; and work with clients to expand their personal skills/capacities (e.g., problem-solving and stress management). The Coach will also co-facilitate the implementation of a network of peer supports and peer support services.
The Indigenous Recovery Coach will support the Program Director in working collaboratively with diverse FNMI communities (rural, remote, urban), individuals, groups and organizations to plan quality, accessible programs and services. The position will engage FNMI communities by developing trust and collaboration.
**Minimum Requirements & Credentials**
- More than 5 years’ experience with urban and rural FNMI people/communities.
- Minimum of 5 years in a supportive role.
- Experience and knowledge in traditional cultural practices is considered an asset.
- Graduation from a recognized education program would be an asset.
- Knowledge of local community resources for social, physical and cultural support and how to access each.
- An understanding of Recovery Principles and experience working with individuals with addictions issues.
- Basic computer literacy skills (i.e., using Microsoft Office).
