Job Summary
**A Brief Overview**
Reporting to the Manager, Infrastructure Services, the Network Specialist performs a crucial role in maintaining the wired and wireless networks on Queen's campus. This role works closely and collaboratively with other members of the network's team to ensure continuity of operations by identifying and resolving issues, patching software, and monitoring and resolving trouble tickets.
When the network experiences a service issue or outage, this role participates in the team effort to: assess user impact, investigate cause, restore service, and implement long-term mitigations to prevent future re-occurrence. The department is working on a multi-year project to upgrade the network hardware across the Kingston campus. In addition to the operational responsibilities, this role will participate in project activities, leading and reporting on assigned tasks. This position identifies, tests, and installs new network technologies, network security strategies, and critical incident response protocols. This position diagnoses and resolves complex network problems and develops and maintains scripts to monitor the availability of network resources. This position defines, validates, programs, and manages a wide range of network devices. This position also evaluates new technologies as potential components of the network strategy, and establishes network performance baselines and audits measurements.

**Job Description**:
**What you will do**
- Identifies, tests, and installs new network technologies, network security strategies, and critical incident response protocols.
- Provides operational support for network technologies and security firewalls.
- Diagnoses and resolves complex network problems.
- Defines, validates, programs, and manages a wide range of network devices.
- Develops and maintains scripts to monitor the availability of network resources.
- Evaluates new technologies as potential components of the network strategy, and establishes network performance baselines and audits measurements.
- Evaluates and ensures the trustworthiness and reliability of network security policies.
- Analyzes data to ensure network platforms meet current and future capacity requirements.
- Creates and maintains documentation to support the university’s network platforms.
- Other duties as required in support of the department and/or unit.
**Required Education**
- Four-Year Bachelor Degree or equivalent. In addition, requires trade certification, qualification, or on-going learning to remain ahead of changes in technology or emerging fields.
**Required Experience**
- More than 3 years and up to and including 5 years of experience.
- Consideration may be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience.
**Job Knowledge and Requirements**
