**Job description**
The Missing Youth Portfolio (MYP) Navigator is committed to helping at-risk youth with complex needs and ensuring they have the appropriate healthy supports. The purpose of this position is to work with the Edmonton Police Service’s Youth Diversion and Intervention (YDI) Unit to locate missing youth and complete any required community resources referrals. As needed, YDI MYP Navigators confirm that any previously referrals to community agencies are providing appropriate ongoing support for the youth to reduce police occurrences.
The MYP Navigator is partnered with an EPS Constable that is the primary investigator for the missing youth file and will collaborate with them throughout the investigation. The MYP Navigator is responsible for connecting with the youth’s professional and natural support team to gain a deeper understanding of the youth’s situation. As the Navigator learns about the youth, they will confirm an approved action plan for once the youth is located and ensure appropriate resources are in place to provide ongoing support.
The MYP Navigator also works with the YDI Unit to provide education and information to families, community, and government agencies on when to report a youth as missing, proactive steps that can be taken and brainstorming creative problem solving for complex files. The Navigator may assist in facilitating Youth Support Circles.
**Key Areas of Responsibility:Documentation and Reporting**
- Ensure documentation of investigations are completed, organized and up to date.
- Submit weekly highlights and reports as required.
- Complete agency specific administrative tasks.
- Improve overall system performance by identifying and addressing system gaps, and redundancies.
**Crisis Intervention and Case Management**
- Work collaboratively with YDI Constables, chain of command, team members and community partners
- Complex case management and crisis intervention with numerous stakeholders including Children
Services, Protection of Children Abusing Drugs Act (PSECA), and Missing Persons Unit
- Navigate and utilize legislation for appropriate crisis intervention.
- Engage directly with youth by telephone, social media, and face to face interactions.
- Connect youth and their families to the appropriate community resources.
- Advocate for youth needs with respect to housing, legal assistance, mental health supports etc.
- Effectively prioritize tasks, take initiative, and maintain flexibility through investigations.
**Community Involvement and Leadership**
- Participate in educational presentations to the public and community stakeholders regarding Missing Youth Portfolio
- Support a continued connection between YDI, EPS and community partners.
**Diversion**
- Provide information on appropriate agency referrals to identified at-risk youth through Youth Support Referrals, and complete appropriate referrals to fit the youth’s needs.
**Other**
- Identify and address systemic gaps that directly impact at-risk youth.
- Engage in ongoing personal and professional development to increase capacity to serve young people.
- Attend agency directed training and meetings.
**Qualifications**:
- Passed Enhanced Security Clearance with vulnerable sector check.
- Passed Child Welfare Intervention Check
- Completed training in Suicide Intervention, Trauma Informed Care, Indigenous Awareness, Standard First Aid, Crisis Intervention, and De-escalation
- Training in supporting individuals that are victims of Sexual Exploitation and Human Trafficking,
Overdose Response is preferred.
**Education**:
- Degree or Diploma in social or human services, or related field, or a minimum of three years relevant experience working with high-risk youth demographics.
- It is expected that they maintain and are in good standing with any relevant professional bodies they may be members of.
**Experience and Knowledge**:
- Experience working with at-risk youth and knowledge of appropriate resource for youth experiencing substance abuse, homelessness, complex mental health concerns and victims of sexual exploitation.
- Effective problem solving, safety planning and crisis intervention skills with an ability to take initiative.
- Understanding of the Missing Persons Act, Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA), Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act, Protection of Children Abusing Drugs Act (PCHAD), and Protection of Sexually Exploited Children’s Act (PSECA), Children’s First Act
- Strong administration, documentation, communication, and time management skills. Prior experience completing professional documentation.
- Excellent advocacy and interpersonal skills to collaborate with professionals, stakeholders and other community supports.
- Experience supporting victims of sexual exploitation and trafficking.
- Creative problem solving.
- Capacity for conflict resolution.
