Certain cities may be located in distant or remote areas in Ontario and may not be accessible by public transit. Refer to the "How to apply" section if you require a disability-related accommodation. **What can I expect to do in this role?**: **Traffic Technician Work Description**: As a Traffic Technician, you may have the opportunity to work on some or all of the following activities: - Assist traffic engineering staff in the review, analysis and documentation of highway operational concerns (e.g. speeding, restricted sight lines, signal timing or the need for illumination, etc.). - Assist staff with technical support in several areas, including the review, approval and coordination of contractor right-of-way usage and closures, capacity analysis, collision analysis, roadside hazards, and traffic control signals and systems. Note: This position may require lifting and carrying weighted items in accordance with the Employment Standards Act and Workplace Health and Safety regulations. **Transportation Technician Work Description**: As a Transportation Technician, you may have the opportunity to work on some or all of the following activities: - Assist staff with transportation field work by collecting and analyzing data, inventories, and surveys. - Assist with transportation inspections and documentation of activities. - Field work may also include patrolling highways to identify maintenance defects, collecting information related to structures and driveways/billboards using a handheld Global Positioning System (GPS), measuring distances, and staking sign locations. - Office work may include inputting the information collected, completing diaries/paperwork, assisting Area Office staff with field data collection for future in-house design projects, assisting with filing and preparing reports, and general office duties. - Plan, organize, coordinate, and manage daily assigned work. Note: This position may require lifting and carrying weighted items in accordance with the Employment Standards Act and Workplace Health and Safety regulations. **How do I qualify?**: **Mandatory**: You must meet all eligibility criteria by the first day of employment (contracts begin between May and July): **Age**: You must be a minimum of 15 years of age. There is no maximum age limit. **Residency**: You must be a resident of Ontario during the term of employment. **Work Status**: You must be legally entitled to work in Canada. You are also required to have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN) upon being hired. **Communication and Interpersonal Skills**: your knowledge with staff and/or clients. **Technical Skills and Knowledge**: - You have basic knowledge of highway engineering, contract administration, and/or maintenance gained either through practical experience and/or academic training. **Analytical and Organizational Skills**: - You work independently or as part of a team; you plan, organize, and prioritize your work to meet competing deadlines. **Other Requirements**: - You are capable of performing manual activities, including lifting and carrying weighted items (in accordance with the Employment Standards Act and Workplace Health and Safety regulations), and conducting inspections in overgrown, uneven, or wet ground. - You are able to work in an outdoor environment. - You must have a valid Ontario G2 (or higher) Driver's License or equivalent with an excellent record. **Other Summer Opportunities**: We offer a variety of job types in diverse career fields. **See what other summer opportunities are currently available** Also, check out all the** other student and new professional opportunities** offered within the Ontario Public Service. **Additional Information**: **Compensation Group**: - Ontario Public Service Employees Union
