**What can I expect to do in this role?**

Under the supervision of the Director, Policy and Communications, and the functional guidance of the Team Lead, Communications, the Communications Officer, participates in the development and implementation of digital communications strategies and plans, proposes, creates and writes digital content and supports media relations.

**Major Responsibilities include**:

- Maintain, implement, and participate in the development of digital communications plans and strategies with the communications team. Provide recommendations on methods and approaches to improve engagement.
- Work with communications team and graphic designer to create and implement a creative, engaging and dynamic social media presence. Calendar, draft and post social media content on a regular basis.
- Maintain and build social media relationships with members and allies by interacting on social media. Identify ways to better provide support to members and find opportunities to work with allies.
- Brief the Team Lead, Communications and Institute Officials on current political issues/decisions, crisis, and other situations, which could have an impact on the
- membership. Provide expertise and ideas to develop and implement creative media communications events and activities.
- Provide support to the Digital Strategist in building, monitoring and updating Google Adwords, Google Display Network ads and similar content.
- Write and produce digital ad copy and ideate creative pitches with the Graphic Designer for Google Display and Facebook Advertising and other mediums.
- Create, monitor, and adjust ongoing ad campaigns.
- Work with the communications team to build and maintain a resource bank of information to respond to media inquiries and/or to proactively interest the media on important issues pertaining to the Institute and to respond to significant events affecting the Institute.
- Contribute to the maintenance of a network of contacts with government, media, other associations and groups and respond to requests for information from internal and external clients.
- Assist with pitching media stories and handling incoming media requests.
- Participate in multi-disciplinary teams assigned to special projects and work collaboratively with employees in other sections.
- Monitor the political landscape and emerging situations. Recommend and implement approved media and government relations’ strategies and campaigns.
- May be requested to undertake other related duties on a periodic basis.

**How do I qualify?**
- Completed a university degree in Journalism, Media Studies, Public Relations or Communications.
- Three (3) to five (5) years of progressive and related experience in the planning and implementation of communications’ plans and strategies or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Proficient in NationBuilder (or similar CRM and web platform), a social media wizard with experience using Google AdWords, Facebook Ads Manager and Power Editor, and Twitter.
- Fluency in both official languages (French and English) is an asset.

**Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities**:

- Knowledge of communications and public relations principles, methods and techniques.
- Ability to research and evaluate the types and extent of media / public information required to support the Institute’s aims and objectives; to plan, organize and develop communications and promotional products, materials, events and activities for a variety of differing audiences.
- Exceptional writing skills as they relate to the creation of digital communication products, including ability to edit and proofread documents in both French and English.
- Knowledge of media relations practices and procedures and experience in dealing with the media and media activities.
- Knowledge in best practices in digital writing and mobilizing communities online.
- Knowledge of union and labour relations issues, parliamentary procedures and processes.
- Project management skills to plan and execute work assignments effectively, establish and re-align priorities based on operational needs.
