**Main Purpose and Function**
The GIS Tech position is responsible for supporting the Complete Streets & Networks Transportation Planning section on several key initiatives including City-wide transportation planning, spatial access metric development, supporting regional and local planning exercises, the City’s Climate Emergency Response, among others. The GIS Technician provides GIS development, GIS analyses, and technical support for the Branch’s work on network planning, equity analysis, area plans, and corridor plans.
This position sits within the Complete Streets & Networks section of the Transportation Planning Branch in Engineering Services and reports directly to the Senior Transportation Planning Engineer and works closely with multidisciplinary transportation engineers, planners and technical staff within Transportation Planning, other Engineering branches, and other City of Vancouver departments.
**Specific Duties/Responsibilities**
- Analyses GIS-based data to regularly summarize Branch performance indicators and metrics.
- Develops, manages and maintains GIS-mapping and a database of transportation planning projects.
- Provides analyses using GIS maps, databases and additional information sources to support technical staff in their evaluation of the transportation network, local areas, and corridors.
- Writes summaries and prepares presentations based on GIS analysis for communication to internal and external groups.
- Maintains and update the Active Mobility Plan and manage quarterly updates to the City’s bike map
- Manages, updates, and provides analysis of the City’s Access as a Metric toolkit.
- Develops and applies new GIS-based tools to further our transportation analysis
- Coordinates with GIS team in Technology Services for troubleshooting and technical GIS matters. Supports and guide other GIS users within the branch.
- Represents the branch and division at internal GIS working groups, and provide divisional expertise on GIS.
- Other duties/responsibilities as assigned.
**Qualifications**
Education and Experience:
- Completion of Grade 12, supplemented by courses in GIS technology, engineering technology, planning, urban studies, applied geoscience, or environmental sciences at a technical school level and sound related experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Experience working within a large and complex organization.
- Experience balancing self-sufficient and collaborative work environments.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Considerable knowledge of GIS in order to provide technical, communications and/or logístical support for design, planning, research and/or policy development projects.
- Sound knowledge of the City’s transportation policies and related current literature, trends, and developments.
- Sound knowledge of tracking, mapping, updating and organizing data using MS Excel and ArcGIS is required.
- Strong knowledge or skills in using computer software such as AutoCAD, Autodesk Map 3D, MS Word, and PowerPoint.
- Excellent interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills
- Strong analytical skills
- Organizational and time management skills
- Ability to work collaboratively and effectively on inter-disciplinary teams, with staff across multiple departments, with contractors, consultants, government agencies, industry stakeholders and the public
- Ability to compile, enter, analyze and assemble geographic and associated non-graphic data using GIS.
