Bioform is seeking people that are focused on sustainability, innovation, excellence, respect, and open-mindedness in whatever job you are working on.
**The Role**:
Bioform is looking for a Surface Chemist to help take the company into our next growth phase by conducting research on material properties to support the advancement of our novel proprietary bio-plastic production platform. As a Surface Chemist you will be helping us produce cellulose-based high-performance composite materials with improved barrier properties like low vapor transmission rate and high water and oxygen permeability. Bioform aims to use natural polymers and additives to achieve full control over the barrier properties of our materials. The Surface Chemist will oversee the development of surface treatment or sizing/coating solutions to achieve the goal. Moreover, in collaboration with the technical team, the surface chemist will help develop a strategic research approach/plan, design systematic studies based on literature and previous findings, and provide guidance to project staff.

- Provide technical oversight and support drafting and review of progress reports on all research findings
- Write patents when required
- Interface and coordinate with external partners, including universities, research centers, and industrial partners
- Detailed interpretation of experimental results, ongoing evaluation of the process, and verification of measured data and models
- Characterize the product surface properties based on composition, morphology, and functionality
- Identify new efficacious raw materials suitable for product development and explore new approaches for achieving performance improvement
- Assist in developing strategies and propose a hypothesis on how to improve the material barrier properties based on literature/personal experience etc.
- Design systematic studies and verify through testing (test the barrier properties, abrasion resistance, mechanical properties, etc.
- Provide training and mentoring to the technical project staff
- Help with the day-to-day operation of the lab (e.g., coordinate instrument maintenance, follow project schedule, etc.)
**Qualifications, Skills and Experience**:
- Masters or PhD in Chemistry, Organic Chemistry or Material Science
- 1-2 years of experience designing and working with material formulation
- Knowledge of material barrier properties
- Experience in the pulp and paper industry is considered an asset
