Duration Approximately Six (6) Months The Acute Inpatient Psychiatry Unit (AIPU) unit provides high-intensity, acute psychiatric services 24 hours a day for individuals in acute psychiatric distress and who are 18 years of age and older experiencing acute psychiatric symptoms and/or at risk of harm to self or others. The core of the program is psychiatric consultation and assessment, supported by nursing, psychology, social work, concurrent disorders, occupational therapy, and recreational therapy services. This service, offered in Nipissing, Temiskaming and the Northern portions of Muskoka-Parry Sound, treats a range of individuals in acute distress or psychiatric crisis with the aim of controlling symptoms and restoring patients’ ability to function. Key means of treatment include pharmacological treatment, skill and knowledge building, and supportive, patient-focused discharge planning. QUALIFICATIONS Certification/Experience/Knowledge: Current Certificate of Registration ~ College of Nurses of Ontario in good standing required Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers (HCP) Certificate required (recent within the last twelve months) Current Gentle Persuasive Approach (GPA) Certificate an asset Minimum (1-2 years) mental Health experience in an active care setting (within the last 2-3 years) required Good knowledge and understanding of the Mental Health Act required Knowledge of psychotropic medications, symptom management, health teaching an asset Knowledge of relevant acts and regulations e.g. Health Disciplines Act, College of Nurses standards, Mental Heath Act, etc an asset Knowledge of major mental illness from a bio psychosocial perspective and experience working with seriously mentally ill clients an asset Knowledge of addictions and substance use withdrawal an asset Skills/Abilities: Must demonstrate excellent level of interpersonal skills Must demonstrate excellent level of written and verbal communication skills Skilled in motivational interviewing an asset Excellent Verbal de-escalation skills required Ability to complete thorough mental health status and risk assessments required Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with all members of the multidisciplinary team, clients, families, regional support services and community partners required Ability to provide health teaching to individuals and groups required Must be committed to continuing education on an annual basis and demonstrate commitment to quality improvement required Ability to effectively assume a leadership role as a collaborative member of the health team required Ability to assume responsibility for patient care in a total patient care climate required Able to meet the physical demands required to provide nursing care to all patients required Ability to problem-solve and function in fast-paced environment required Excellent demonstrated assessment, critical thinking and intervention skills required Must demonstrate basic computer knowledge Must demonstrate commitment to ensure personal safety, safety of fellow workers, patients, volunteers, and visitors Ability to support and contribute to a culture of safety and prevention of adverse health events required Must demonstrate good attendance and work record Bilingualism (Advanced level English/French) is required.
