Applicants are encouraged to self-identify on their electronic application. Under the direction of the Fleet Supervisor, the Apprentice provides the maintenance and repair of 3-Ton (or greater) Trucks and a variety of other municipal equipment. The incumbent would be subject to noise, odors, grease, and dirt associated with a garage environment.  DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Receive, accept, and complete work orders and assigned tasks through the use a computerized fleet maintenance system, i.e., Fleet Focus.Diagnose, determine the source and extent of, and carry out the necessary repairs to all types of equipment, diesel/gas, and hydraulic equipment contained in a major municipal fleet operation.Must be willing to accept necessary training in related courses.Continuously take necessary training to successfully pass and stay current on vehicle repair proceduresMaintain a safe and healthy workplace, per the Occupational Health and Safety regulations.Must have a good working knowledge of Preventative Maintenance and how it pertains to a fleet operation.Complete and maintain electronic work orders and necessary records, as required.Must register and comply with the Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Program to attain a journeyperson certification.Must comply with the Memorandum of Understanding #4- Apprenticeship Training as identified in the CUPE Local 108 collective agreement.QUALIFICATIONS:Education and Experience:Preference will be given to candidates in the following order:Graduate of a related 2-year diploma program from a recognized community college; OREligible to enroll in an apprenticeship program (with 2 years of relevant work experience in a garage environment)Completion of grade 12 (or equivalent) with an interest in the tradeCandidates already enrolled in an apprenticeship program are also encouraged to applyMust possess a valid Class 5 drivers' license, with a good driving record (a current Driver’s Abstract will be required before appointment)Must possess own hand toolsMust have a reasonable knowledge of equipment maintenance and repairMust have a reasonable understanding of preventative maintenanceMust have familiarity with computersMust be able to work in a team environmentMust have good attendance, as well as be reliable and punctualSecurity Clearance Requirements: Applicants may be required to complete an employment security screening check. Please note – Testing may be conducted as a component of the selection process to assess technical and job specific knowledge.
