Research Assistants are normally students, in a University of Winnipeg undergraduate program, employed to assist with tasks related to research. Work is performed within defined guidelines and under supervision of a more senior researcher or faculty member.
Position Overview:
Student will work on various projects including black ash trees from Manitoba and Quebec and frost-rings formation in bog trees. These projects involve developing tree-ring chronologies to help assess the impact of climate on tree growth. The selected student will be working in close collaboration with a tree-ring technician. These projects involve many research laboratories across Canada and the United States. Down the road we want to understand how black ash responds to climate across its distribution range and how it is affected by various disturbances like the Emerald ash borer.
Duties:
- The candidate will be helping with sample preparation (sanding wood samples: cores and cross-sections) and measuring tree-ring widths for various tree-ring projects.
- Preparing samples and measuring tree rings both requires precision.
- Student will also be learning basics of dendrochronology.
Qualifications
- Major in Environmental Studies, Forest Ecology would be an asset.
- Knowledge on how to use sanding equipment and how to prepare good quality wood sample for analysis. A general knowledge of wood anatomy and tree-ring analysis would be an asset.
- Ability to concentrate and to work continuous hours using a dissecting microscope is a must.
Condition(s) of Employment:
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
- Students must be approved for the 2024-25 Work-Study program. Students may be eligible for the Work-Study Program if they meet all of the following criteria:
- Currently an undergraduate or graduate student (PACE and ELP students are currently ineligible);
- Enrolled full-time for the current Fall/Winter session (i.e. at least 18 credit hours or 12 credit hours if registered with Accessibility Services);
- Completed 24 credit hours at an undergraduate level at the University (or equivalent);
- Have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0;
- Have demonstrated financial need (shortage between your expenses and resources)*; and

A Canadian citizen, permanent resident, protected person or an international student with a valid study permit.
- An application is incomplete if you have put zero resources. As a full-time student, you are expected to have some form of funding source.
The period of work will be from ASAP - December 31, 2024 (with an extension until the end of January possible) and the estimated total hours of work will be 49 hours.
