What can I expect to do in this role?- Get an opportunity to gain a breadth of experience in occupational hygiene assessments and provide professional advice and consultation on related issues and hazards.
- Enforce the Occupational Health and Safety Act and associated regulations.
- Enforce the Building Opportunities for the Skilled Trades Act (BOSTA) and associated regulations.
- Act as agents in the enforcement of other applicable legislation such as: Hazardous Products Act, Fire Code, and Building Code Applications.
- Perform occupational hygiene inspections in health care, institutional, industrial, construction, and mining workplaces.
- Collect scientific data of an occupational hygiene nature and analyze worker exposures to hazardous substances.
- Provide consultation, advice, recommendations to Ministry inspectors and workplace representatives.
- A valid class “G” driver's license or equivalent recognized by Ontario.
- Certification in occupational hygiene or ability to become certified within 2 years.
- Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check, local police check and a drivers records check upon hiring and every 5 years.
- Ability to travel to workplaces in your primary assigned geographical area.
- For bilingual positions, advanced level oral and written French skills.
- Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulations, and relevant policies to identify and evaluate occupational health and safety hazards.
- Knowledge of occupational hygiene principles and methods.
- Knowledge of physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, and industrial ventilation related to occupational hygiene.
- Knowledge of federal and provincial occupational health and safety legislation.
- Well developed communication skills to promote compliance, provide advice and consultation.
- Ability to document and convey confidential and sensitive information with experience in report writing.
- Conflict resolution and interpersonal skills to interact with, impact, and influence others.
- Ability to enforce, interpret, apply, and explain legislation.
- Experience conducting inspections and investigations including interviewing experience.
- Reasoning, evaluative, and analytical skills to interpret information and assess compliance.
- Experience performing occupational hygiene inspections and health hazard and exposure control assessments.
- Ability to anticipate, identify, and evaluate occupational health hazards and recommend control measures.
- Use of tact and good judgement to make recommendations.
- Knowledge of or experience with computer information technology and business software applications.
- Planning and organizational skills to co-ordinate own workload.
