Description

The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Lab Technician. This Fixed Term Recurring Part-time position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

Reporting to the Principal Investigator.

Recurring Part-time employees are hourly employees engaged to perform work on an irregular schedule.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Under general supervision & direction of the PI, develop and implement original experiments within the guidelines of the research
  • Plan, organize, direct, execute and evaluate the scientific activities related to this research project, and conduct experiments including histological processing of tissues and immunofluorescent stainings, RNA isolation, as well as cell culture experiments
  • Assist with designing, optimizing and implementing the respective protocols
  • Participates in the collation of data to produce publication-worthy figures
  • Reliable and safe operation of all laboratory equipment
  • Perform, record and interpret immunostaining experiments
  • Perform RNA-seq analyses and integrate the data obtained with single cell sequencing data
  • Under general supervision & direction of the PI, select promising candidate genes for further analysis
  • Generate figures or graphical depictions of data

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree with specialization in Biomedical Sciences or related area
  • Minimum 2 years of experience and completion of post-secondary education in related discipline
  • Hands-on expertise in histology, immunostaining, and image capturing
  • Hands-on expertise in cell culture, cloning and cell transfections
  • Hands-on expertise in image analyses
  • Perform detailed design, documentation, and implementation of moderately complex technological systems
  • Interact with other members of the team and undertake literature reviews
  • Provide technical support for other team members through advice on technical lab issues
  • Knowledge of theory and practical application of technical procedures
  • Experience working with various biological samples (eg. Cells, tissues)
