Laboratory Assistant I

If so, then the Molecular Pathology team in the Calgary zone has an exciting opportunity for you. The Molecular Pathology department provides complex molecular testing for a variety of inherited and acquired conditions as part of Alberta Precision Laboratories (APL). As a casual Medical Laboratory Assistant I supporting the Molecular Pathology laboratory at the Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre, you will have the opportunity to learn the many workflows of both areas. You will plan and organize your work responsibilities and processes to perform standard and specialized procedures. You will be responsible for pre-analytical specimen receiving and accessioning, distributing, processing (including DNA and RNA extraction), storage, packaging and shipment of specimens as required. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to, responding to inquiries; cleaning; monitoring and preventative maintenance of lab equipment and work areas; maintaining common supplies; updating inventories and data sheets; and participating in training, lab quality and safety requirements. Casual shifts may be scheduled in advance or as same day call-in to ensure department support for vacation leaves and/or sick leaves. Shifts are Monday to Friday days and may be full or part shifts depending on operational need.

Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent.
Additional Required Qualifications:Previous technical experience with processing samples. Excellent typing and database entry abilities (both speed and accuracy). Experience with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Adobe Acrobat. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment. Superior organizational and time management skills with demonstrated ability to prioritize work and deliver accurate work under stressful conditions. Accessioning experience.
Preferred Qualifications:Minimum of 1 year current experience in a clinical molecular or anatomic pathology lab. Minimum of 1 year Epic accessioning experience. Experience with external send-out of samples. Post-secondary education with Molecular Biology courses would be an asset.
