Description

The Technical Operations Group in the Faculty of Science is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Science Shop Machinist.

The Machinist is responsible for providing technical support and advice to faculty, staff and students

for all departments within the Faculty of Science. This includes the design, construction, maintenance

and repair of equipment and apparatus used in variety of undergraduate and graduate courses,

teaching and research. The Machinist will train users in the operation of various types of equipment.

Reporting to the Manager, Technical Support Services, the Machinist works 35 hours per week and is a part of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE).

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Responsible for the design and fabrication of equipment for use in teaching or research laboratories.
  • Ensure the repair and maintenance of equipment involved in student teaching laboratories and research projects.
  • Ensure the workshop is operated and maintained in a fully functional manner.
  • Ensure equipment and machinery is maintained in a safe and operational state.
  • Operation of manual lathes, mills, grinders, and various related machines and accessories.
  • Program and operation of CNC machining centers and turning centers.
  • Utilize advanced CAD software to design projects, work with CAM software to program CNC equipment for manufacturing the designed components.
  • Inspection, repair and fabrication of vacuum pumps and systems.
  • Maintenance, training and repair of Liquid Nitrogen storage and distribution equipment. Client/Customer Support
  • Positive working relationship with student, faculty, and staff.
  • Co-operation and collaboration with other internal and external clients to establish a cohesive and informative environment.
  • Work directly with clients assisting in design, development and material selection for a wide variety of projects required throughout the university.
  • Responsible for completing tasks and duties in a professional and timely manner.
  • Assess a variety of situations to provide the best and most cost effective solutions.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to apprentices and students, both graduate and undergraduate.
  • Manage tracking of inventory and equipment that students sign out, as well as equipment and tool orders.
  • Maintain records and files to ensure that information is as up-to-date as possible, recognizing that this information must be kept accurate and current for use by others.
  • Identify professional development needs and skill priorities; continues own personal development, learning and training; keeps current with post-secondary developments.
  • Adhere to all university policy and regulatory requirements, including FOIP legislation.
  • Liaise with other units as appropriate.
  • Participate in cross-training to assist in other areas when needed and to meet Technical Support.
  • Understands and complies with the requirements of the University's Occupational Health and Safety Policy
  • Has knowledge of and understands the expectations of the University's Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS) and applicable Faculty/Departmental/Unit specific health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Ensures that all work conducted is in accordance with the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulation and Code and other health and safety legislation as applicable.

Qualifications / Requirements

  • Journeyman Machinist with an interprovincial red seal required.
  • Minimum 5 years of directly related experience.
  • Extensive knowledge and application of all types of machining is required.
  • A strong mechanical background with the through working knowledge in related trades including sheet metal and welding is essential.
  • Thorough knowledge of materials and the characteristics of metals, plastics and composites for machining and fabrication.
  • Knowledge of scientific laboratory research and instructional activities, instrumentation and associated infrastructure requirement.
  • Thorough knowledge of vacuum pumps and systems.
  • Thorough knowledge of Liquid Nitrogen storage and distribution equipment.
  • Strong background in trade related safety and the correct use of safety procedures as they relate to the workshop and OHSA.
  • Electronics knowledge would be an asset.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills required.
  • Proven organizational skills, multitasking and high attention to detail required.
  • Ability to think critically and creatively under pressure while exercising good judgement and discretion required.
  • Demonstrated ability to be resourceful, creative, innovative, and flexible required.
  • The ability to work independently to tight timelines, maintain confidentiality and deal effectively with overlapping and changing deadlines is required.
  • Advanced Computer skills including MS Office Suite (including Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel), SolidWorks, and Mastercam required.
  • Knowledge of university policies and procedures is an asset.
  • Ability to build relationships to accomplish goals with a diverse groups within and outside of the Faculty of Science essential.
  • Must possess or be prepared to obtain certification in WHMIS.
  • Must have valid First Aid certification.
