Cape Breton University and Dalhousie have partnered to establish the Cape Breton Medical Campus in Sydney, Nova Scotia, with the goal of enhancing healthcare delivery in rural communities. CBMC aims to train a new generation of physicians skilled in family medicine, rural practice, and Indigenous health, contributing to Nova Scotia’s evolving health reform agenda.

We are seeking an Assistant Dean, Student & Resident Affairs to provide leadership and support to students and residents at CBMC. This is a 0.3 FTE position requiring flexibility to work within the CBMC schedule structure. The Assistant Dean will oversee student and resident affairs, offering guidance on academic progression, career planning, wellness, and financial management. The role involves providing personalized support for learners, facilitating accommodations for health or academic issues, and working closely with the Assistant Deans at Dalhousie’s other campuses to ensure a consistent experience across sites.

Key responsibilities include providing individual counseling to students and residents on personal, academic, and career-related matters, including crisis intervention, academic remediation, and wellness support. The Assistant Dean will also lead career counseling efforts, helping learners navigate career paths in medicine and providing guidance on electives, specialty choices, and residency applications. Financial wellness is another core aspect of this role, with the Assistant Dean facilitating referrals to financial resources and organizing educational activities to help students and residents manage debt and plan for their financial future.

The Assistant Dean will provide social support by fostering a positive learning environment by organizing social and community-building activities that promote a collaborative atmosphere among students and residents. The role also includes administrative responsibilities, such as managing the budget for Student & Resident Affairs, supervising staff, and reporting to the Senior Associate Dean. The Assistant Dean will represent CBMC on Faculty of Medicine committees and chair the Resident Wellness Committee, ensuring that the well-being of residents is prioritized.

The Assistant Dean will be responsible for managing the administrative functions of the Student & Resident Affairs office, including budget oversight, staff supervision, and coordination of office activities. The Assistant Dean will serve on various Faculty of Medicine and CBMC committees as required, contributing to policy development and student services planning. The role will involve submitting annual reports on goals, progress, and new initiatives to the Senior Associate Dean and other relevant leadership. The Assistant Dean will also chair the Faculty of Medicine Resident Wellness Committee, leading efforts to promote the mental health and wellness of residents across the campus.

The Assistant Dean will collaborate with faculty members, site directors, and external partners to ensure that all programming is aligned with Dalhousie’s standards and goals. The role requires a proactive, collaborative leader who is committed to the success of learners and will work to ensure they have the resources, support, and opportunities to excel in their medical training.

To be considered, candidates must hold:

  • MD degree required
  • Master’s degree in Education or Medical Education is considered an asset
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to organize and prioritize workloads, as well as the ability to work independently and multi-task in a deadline driven, team environment
  • Ability to navigate and work with confidential setting with sensitive data
  • Knowledge of medical education programs and/or academic health care environment would be beneficial.
  • Demonstrated self-starter that has shown to exercise initiative and sound judgment in all aspects of work

This role is a 0.3 FTE role and the ability to work flexible hours within the CBMC schedule structure is a requirement
