Dementia Support Specialist

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Dementia Support Specialist to join our team at the Alzheimer Society of B.C. As a key member of our staff, you will play a vital role in providing support and education to individuals living with dementia and their caregivers.
Job Summary
The Dementia Support Specialist is responsible for coordinating the delivery of standardized workshops, support groups, and other programs aimed at empowering people living with dementia and their families. You will work closely with healthcare professionals, community organizations, and volunteers to build strong relationships and ensure seamless service delivery. Your primary focus will be on developing and maintaining partnerships with community centers, recruiting and supervising volunteers, and facilitating social interaction through engaging activities like Minds in Motion.
Key Responsibilities
• Coordinate the delivery of workshops and support groups tailored to meet the diverse needs of individuals living with dementia and their caregivers.
• Develop and maintain relationships with healthcare professionals, allied health professionals, and other stakeholders to build a robust referral network and promote early intervention services.
• Recruit, train, and supervise volunteers to assist with program delivery and ensure they receive proper orientation, training, and evaluation.
• Facilitate social interaction and encourage involvement in activities that cater to the interests and abilities of participants in the Minds in Motion program.
• Evaluate participant suitability for the program and manage transitions with sensitivity and awareness.
• Connect participants with relevant resources and services offered by the Alzheimer Society of B.C. and the broader community.
• Other duties as required to meet the needs of the role and align with organizational goals.
About You
To succeed in this role, you should possess a post-secondary education or degree in a related field such as health or social agency. Your experience working with individuals living with dementia and their families is essential, along with your ability to foster relationships, manage volunteers, and facilitate inclusive programs. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, coupled with attention to detail and a results-driven approach, are also crucial for success in this position.
Requirements
• 3-5 years of experience in a health or social agency-related function or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Knowledge and lived experience with persons living with dementia.
• Experience providing support and information in a human services environment.
• Experience developing and building community connections.
• Knowledge and experience with group facilitation and peer support interventions.
• Knowledge and experience with dementia, understanding of related issues.
• Volunteer management training/experience.
• Diploma in Recreation Therapy is an asset.
• Proven leadership abilities and ability to work independently.
• Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
• Strong organizational and time management skills.
• Must have access to reliable transportation.
• Regular travel within the North/Central Okanagan and occasional travel to regional and provincial meetings is required.
• Some evening and weekend work may be required; flexibility regarding scheduling is expected.
