Financial Management Specialist

The City of Grande Prairie is seeking a highly skilled Financial Management Specialist to join our dynamic team in the Financial Management department. As a key member of our team, you will play a crucial role in supporting and organizing the City's budgeting processes and activities, as well as organizational wide variance reporting and forecasting.
This is an exciting opportunity for a seasoned professional to leverage their expertise in financial management, leadership, and collaboration to drive business results and contribute to the success of our organization.
Key Responsibilities- Budget Planning and Support:
- Develop and execute priority-based budgeting (PBB) for city-wide operating and capital budgets, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives.
- Prepare templates, presentation materials, and the annual budget book to support Council Budget Deliberations.
- Conduct financial research and analysis to support budget requests.
- Support the Director of Financial Management and the CFO through ad hoc budget-related activities and processes.
- Variance Reporting and Forecasting Analysis:
- Provide strategic guidance for monthly and quarterly forecasting and variance reporting.
- Collaborate with departments on salary forecasts, budgeting, variance explanations, and financial trends analysis.
- Provide technical and financial training and support to departments, ensuring compliance with financial reporting standards.
- Leadership, Coaching, and Training of Staff:
- Lead the team of Financial Advisors through performance management, coaching, and mentorship.
- Provide ongoing training and support for City staff and general business planning and support.
- Education and Experience:
- Post-secondary degree in Accounting or Business Administration with a minimum of 3 years' experience in a supervisory role in public accounting or local government finance.
- Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation is required.
- Skills and Qualifications:
- Expertise in financial management, including financial reporting, variance analysis, budgeting, and forecasting.
- Strong leadership and collaboration skills, with the ability to lead and collaborate effectively within a team environment.
- Strategic thinking skills, with the ability to translate financial data into actionable insights.
