About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Commercial Trader to join our team at Scotiabank. As a key member of our trading floor, you will be responsible for executing trades, providing market insights, and supporting our business lines.

Key Responsibilities
  • Trade Execution
    • Provide trade execution, support, and market insights to our business lines.
    • Ensure our business representatives understand the risks and rewards associated with executing trades.
    • Educate our teams on regulatory requirements, market best practices, and internal compliance procedures.
    • Be the subject matter expert on the products traded by your team, resolving trading, compliance, and operational issues.
    • Develop and maintain strong relationships with our business representatives.
  • Risk Management
    • Understand Scotiabank's risk appetite and risk culture, using the bank's risk mitigation strategies and processes to manage risks in day-to-day trading activities.
    • Ensure compliance with Scotiabank's Values, Code of Conduct, and Global Sales Principles.
    • Maintain up-to-date knowledge on markets, products, competitors, and regulatory changes.
    • Adhere to trading compliance requirements, internal and external guidelines, rules, and regulations.
  • Education and Work Experience
    • 3-5 years of experience in Equity trading and Options trading.
    • Relevant industry courses, including Canadian Securities course (SC), Conduct and Practices Handbook (CPH), Trader Training Course, and Options Licensing Course.
    • Knowledge of technology used to support trading and trading operation functions, ideally IRESS, Charles River, and Broadridge.
    • Analytical thinking skills, collaborative approach to working with others.
    • Ability to work with a team of traders and maintain close working relationships.
    • Superior interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to make decisions in a fast-paced environment.
    • University degree in Business, Economics, Engineering, or another related field.
  • Dimensions
    • Deploy a high standard of care and judgment when trading client orders.
    • Conduct trading activity within the limits approved by the Bank's Risk Policy Committee.
    • Knowledge of the trading platforms used for Equity products.
    • Working knowledge of the end-to-end trade cycle workflows, ensuring client trades are not impacted by clearing and settlements issues.
    • Well-versed in the rules and regulations that apply to Equity trading.
    • Ongoing need for continuous learning to maintain/upgrade technical expertise and knowledge of industry regulations and trends.
  • Working Conditions
    • Fast-paced trading floor with numerous factors contributing to mental and physical stress.
    • On-site five days a week.
    • Longer than standard working hours to manage deadlines, business priorities, and client events.
