Grounds Maintenance Specialist

Job Summary:
This role is responsible for maintaining the grounds and landscaping of the Vancouver Island University campus. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of the Groundskeeper to ensure the campus looks its best.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform gardening and landscaping duties, including lawn care, flower bed maintenance, and pruning.
- Support Facilities Services and Campus Development in maintaining and developing campus landscapes.
- Plan, layout, and prepare planters and flower beds.
- Operate grounds equipment, including mowers, trimmers, and irrigation systems.
- Monitor water requirements of outdoor vegetation and perform grounds equipment maintenance.
- Participate in snow removal operations and respond to emergencies.
Requirements:
The successful candidate will possess a horticultural diploma from a recognized institution, along with five years of directly related experience. They must be physically fit, capable of continuous moderate physical activity, and occasional heavy lifting. Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience and certification in skid steer operation, as well as a valid Applicator Certificate, are preferred.
