At the National Research Council, we are seeking a talented Exoplanet Science Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our research group, you will have the opportunity to work on cutting-edge projects that push the boundaries of science and engineering.

About the Role

We are looking for a highly motivated and experienced researcher to lead the testing and optimization of our facility-class focal plane wavefront sensor, CAL2, in the Gemini Planet Imager instrument at the Gemini North Observatory. You will collaborate with our GPI2 science team on groundbreaking discoveries and take a leadership role in enabling a new era of exoplanet science.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the testing and optimization of CAL2 for on-sky operations
  • Collaborate with the GPI2 science team on exoplanet discovery projects
  • Develop and implement advanced star-blocking coronagraph masks to enhance exoplanet detection and characterization
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A PhD (or equivalent) within the past three years (PhD received on or after July 1, 2022) or expect to complete your PhD within 6 months of appointment
  • Experience in high-contrast direct imaging areas, including coronagraphy and wavefront sensing
  • Strong programming skills in languages such as Python or C++
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
