About the Role

The City of Vancouver is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Social Planner I to support the implementation of the City's Healthy City Strategy, Downtown Eastside Plan, and other related initiatives. This role will focus on community development, capacity building, and research and evaluation to support the economic development of equity-denied communities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and Foster Partnerships: Develop and maintain partnerships with community organizations, non-profits, and private stakeholders to create employment, capacity building, and income-generating opportunities for residents from equity-denied communities.
  • Community Engagement: Participate in and facilitate community and stakeholder engagement processes related to the implementation of the City's Community Economic Development Strategy and other related strategies.
  • Research and Evaluation: Conduct technical research and data analysis to support the development, implementation, and ongoing enhancement of the relevant strategies within the Social Policy Department.
  • Policy Development: Prepare and contribute to the development of policy, departmental responses, reports, and recommendations to civic departments, senior staff, City Council, and other agencies on pertinent community economic development issues and/or social policy issues.
  • Project Management: Project manage City initiatives that leverage partnerships with key stakeholders, including non-profits, community agencies, Business Improvement Associations, local post-secondary institutions, social enterprises, and other community stakeholder groups.
  • Leadership and Collaboration: Lead complex projects that involve multiple internal and external partners, and provide support and advice to community plans, social infrastructure projects, grants, and related initiatives.
Qualifications
  • Education and Experience: Master's or Bachelor's degree in social planning, community development, community economic development, geography, social work, public health, or a related field, with experience in community capacity building, community development, research and evaluation, and public policy development.
  • Knowledge and Skills: Considerable knowledge of the social determinants of health, community development and community economic development processes, practices, models, and principles, as well as qualitative and quantitative data collection and report writing.
  • Abilities: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, ability to reconcile differing perspectives, develop consensus, and secure cooperation and support both internally and with external stakeholders, and ability to work both independently and as a team member.
