Job Summary:

The Vancouver Aquarium seeks a highly skilled and experienced Registered Veterinary Technician to join our team in the Marine Mammal Rehabilitation Centre. As a key member of our veterinary team, you will assist veterinarians with daily routine and non-routine veterinary treatments and procedures, providing emergency care for critical patients, diagnostic imaging, clinical pathology, diagnostic sampling, and data collection for current research projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in routine veterinary procedures, including anesthesia, surgery, treatment, diagnostics, and necropsies.
  • Provide veterinary care and feeding of marine mammals, medications, and laboratory procedures, including blood collection, physical exams, fluid administration, and wound care.
  • Participate in research programs, including collection, processing, and storage of samples.
  • Prepare prescriptions, dispense, and administer medication, as well as maintain quality control.
  • Provide education information to the public as required.
  • Assist in supervision and training of volunteers and practicum students.
  • Provide in-field assessment, capture, and transportation of marine mammals.
  • Assist in the preparation of animals for release, including tagging and microchipping.
  • Assimilate, record, and manage data, maintaining detailed administrative records, data entry, reports, phone records, etc.
  • Communicate with DVMs and remotely apply medical treatment plans.
  • Maintain organizational safety standards.
  • Release rehabilitated animals.

Requirements:

  • Veterinary Technologist or Veterinary Technician Diploma/Degree.
  • Proof of current registration status with local VT Association.
  • Essential knowledge in marine mammal anatomy and physiology.
  • Valid Driver's License required.
  • Previous experience with wildlife or marine mammal species preferred.

Working Conditions:

  • Exposure to animal bites, pathogens, and chemicals.
  • Job requires high degree of alertness to changing conditions when working with animals.
  • Requires standing for periods of time.
  • Requires working rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and potential for overnight shifts.
  • Exposure to slippery conditions and uneven surfaces.
  • Required to work in extreme weather conditions.
  • Ability to safely lift 20kgs.

Salary Range: $24 - $34 per hour.
